Maine Hntr
An unfortunate tragedy, as your title says ice is never safe especially when you get on larger bodies of water like lake superior, springs and channels can be anywhere causing unsafe ice that may look like the ice all around. arrow32
Hate to hear that. Gotta be careful on the ice. Dont stay cold enough anymore to get enough ice here to get on
Ravin R10 man
Crossing between the apostle Islands is not a wise idea..not sure that is what he did..but you do risk your life crosing a channel...what was safe in the am can be open water in pm..old timers will always tell you TRAVEL PARRARREL TO THE ISLANDS SHORE..and not too far out..think maybe he got in a hurry to relocate a group he was guiding? I just spoke to a guy that heard firsthand from a buddy that was with Jim... As I thought, they were relocating after a no bite out by Long Island.. (bottom of map)..and crossed the south channel between Long and MADELIN...Jim was out front and broke though, one of the guys got up close enough to throw him a set of picks..but Jim coud not pull himself out...so an ice bar was offered , Jim grabbed it but could not hang onto it..and went under before the windsled got there..he was submerged for some time before they got to him. Husabud
I put my Summit though the ice 8 yrs ago. Thankfully I was of clear mind and relaxed. I did the backstroke back to safe ice where I was, thankfully, able to get back on the ice. I got myself to a very large boulder where I was able to strip down and dry out. It was 25 that day and I was ten miles from camp. With a friends help, I am here to tell about it. Ice is never safe over channels or springs. Please be careful. my sled sat at 27 ft under water for a week and a half. I have only been riding twice since and No ice. Nobody knows when it is there turn. Condolences. PotashRLS
Sad story for sure. I can tell you that if you go through the ice, the odds are not with you. Unfortunately responders can do only so much, especially in a time frame were seconds and minutes matter. The danger that goes with trying to save someone in that circumstance is enormous and while it is the job of public safety to respond and handle it, every possible scenario can't possibly be prepared for. Thoughts and prayers for his family.
