250savage
Hey all, I'm looking to buy a pistol for home protection/target shooting (non competitive). I was really interested in the S&W Sigma 9mm because it's relatively cheap (I'm looking to save as much as possible here). However people are buying like crazy around here and probably around the country, so I'm not sure if I will be able to find one in one of the local shops. I haven't gone and talked to any of them yet because I'm still saving up but my question is: if I can't get the Sigma 9, what other semi-auto pistols are comparable at a reasonable price? To me, reasonable is less than $500. Thoughts?
redkneck
Google the Arcus 98 dac. Lots of gun for the $
VermontHunter
I actually have the Arcus DAC 9mm ... and redneck is right it's alot of gun for the dollars, I love the feel and it's definately a smooth shooter. This weapon is based on the Browning Hi Power platform. I highly recommend this weapon.
hoosierhunter
Looking for advice/opinions Buy a .40 or .45 for home defense. They have more knockdown power. 9mm is good but they are referred to as a gun that just pokes holes in people even with defense rounds. I do recommend a 9 for a conceal carry though because of their smaller profile in subcompact versions.
Maine Hntr
I have the S&W M&P 9mm, great gun for accuracy and home defense IMO... if you plan to carry it can be a little bulky for an everyday carry gun but a good gun all around nonetheless... I paid probably just under the $500 price for the gun...
250savage
When I can afford it, I'm definitely going to get a .40 or .45 for home protection. The 9mm is going to have to do for the time being and then eventually I'll use it for target shooting only. Just need something to get me by. Appreciate all the input though! dbHunterNY
you'll shoot a 9mm a heck of a lot better than a 40S&W or any of the 45's if it's your first handgun. not sure if it is or not. follow ups are much quicker with a 9mm and cheaper. Some pistols like some Glocks you can buy in a bigger caliber and then buy a conversion barrel kit for them for 9mm. 9mm is quite a bit cheaper than the others in cost of ammo which is something to consider. ....i've been doing lots of research and that's a small amount of what i've found out. 250savage
Yeah I have definitely considered the cost of ammo and that's why I want the 9. And that was my thought as well, that a couple of well placed shots can still put someone down if needed. This won't be the first pistol I've ever shot, but the first I've purchased. Polarbear857
Looking for advice/opinions High tech also makes a nice 9mm very very little. $100-200 for a good gun
Ravin R10 man
Have you considered a 12ga. 00Buck?
pointing_dogs_rule
As I have stated many times on this forum... "Make sure the gun fits your hands in a comfortable way". I have big hands and some of those compacts just don't fit. No use onwing a gun if you can not shoot it properly. With that stated... I own a few Springfield arms pistols. I really like the XD and the XD(s). Very reliable easy to shoot & last time I looked reasonable price. The only problem is the XD(s) is only made in the .45.. they are coming out with a 9mm this spring. PS: I have a Kahr 9mm that doesn't fit me well.... it's for sale. good luck to all the dog PS: originally from PA. Never went to PENN SATE, however, a big fan. Pretty good football class recruited this year. I really like O'Brien. Go PENN STATE wrestling... sad to see them lose to Iowa. LETMGROW
I have a Sigma .40. Pretty good gun for the money but not the most accurate handgun in the lot. The magazine is a bear to load also for some reason. Price is only one consideration IMO. Everyone today wants to be thrifty for obvious reasons. You might be better served to wait it out and buy a litttle higher grade gun for your use. I've done a little work to my Sigma and it does feed well and isn't too fussy about different brands of ammo now. I did have some trouble at first. My next will probably be a Beretta. You truly do get what you pay for. Lynn
250savage
Thanks everyone. I've been doing research on all of the suggested pistols and I'll post pics and probably the price I paid for everything when I do finally buy something. Might be another couple of weeks yet. Darn school loans.
