My wife recently bought me a 30-06 And as far as the gun goes I love it so far the only problem is I Have a .270 and a 7mm mag both of those guns seem like they cover their "uses" better then a 30-06 does my question is Is there any ammo out there that would better suit the 06 then the 270 for deer. Or any ammo that would make it a better choice over the 7mm for large game?

It sounds like you have three good ones there.

I have been an '06 fan for many years. It is probably one of the most versatile rounds out there. Just check the different ammo makes for the vast listing of rounds available for the '06.

There is nothing in North America the '06 won't handily put down. Ammo is cheaper than alot of other large caliber rounds and is readily available.

Just as one example: Remington offers rounds from 125 to 220 grain bullets. For Whitetail deer I prefer a bullet either in a 165 or 180 grain. Opinions will vary on this. I handload and have worked up a 180 gr. round which works very well for me.

Give your wife a big hug and enjoy the new gun. You will soon become a fan of the venerable '06.

the 30-06 will go after same thing everything else will. the 7mm mag will only shine at very long ranges compared to the 30-06. within reasonable and respectible ranges the 30-06 can be used and ammo is cheap compared to the 7mm mag. 270 is a wash but once you get up to elk or something bigger the 30-06 has a little more knock down power. that said i don't think any gun of the three works better or worse than 30-06. if you can get the 30-06 to shoot tight groups will a lighter bullet and say a 180 gr bullet with controlled expansion then i'd say it can replace them both.

I would also add, about the only round with the versatility of the 30-06 would be the .308. This is my cartridge of choice for bolt action guns. That is only due to the fact it is a short action which I really like. With a 150 gr. bullet I have killed several deer with no follow up shot needed.

My son hunts with a .270 and has had great success with it. I like that too.

Guess I never found a cartridge I didn't like. It boils down to personal preference more than anything else.
