pointing_dogs_rule
Keep up the work DB. Turkeygirl, I agree with DB. There's a saying in elk hunting: "you can't kill an elk if there are none around". Applies the same with turkeys. Scout, scout and scout until you locate them and then hunt them. Keep up the hunting and have fun guys and gals. good luck to all the dog
Turkeygirl
Very true. Going to try a late morning hunt, try some spots close to home here, see if anything fires up. Then go out to another spot tonight, see if anything gobbles from the roost on it's own, not even going to bother with an owl hoot or anything on state land. dbHunterNY
yesterday evening i was in the garage working on my tractor when i thought i heard a gobble. go outside and ended up seeing out the the newly planted corn a group of jakes and a longbeard toting a long really thick beard. can't hunt afternoons here in NY otherwise i'd be changed and out the door after them in seconds. lol maybe if i get a free morning before work i'll try to find again. Turkeygirl
Nothing yet here....went out yesterday about 9:30am to the field where I'd last seen a bird, def. found the gobbler's tracks in the mud, few days old....also some other boot tracks. Nothing yesterday or today...didn't find anything in the field indication the bird got taken but ya never know. Going to try to go out tonight to another spot and listen, thinking this bird may be on another hill.

Turkeygirl
Yeah dB, I wonder the same thing, hope someone left us some birds. I went out yesterday AM after working the night before, heard nothing in the early AM then heard a gobble from a bird late M at some dogs barking. I didn't go out this AM, worked till 11pm again last night and was so tired, slept will 10am. I will probably go out tomorrow and maybe Monday AM. Couple years ago on the last day took a friend out and got a bird to respond on state land, going to hit that area at some point but just not looking like a good year. pointing_dogs_rule
Had two toms at 40 yards this am. Too much brush to take a good shot. Tomorrow is the last day in Iowa. good luck to all the dog
dbHunterNY
this weekend i managed to get out once. jake came in and a couple others spotted and not persued. got something to gobble but ended up being too far on the neighbors to pull to our side. rest of the morning was dead silent. came down off the hill and worked on stuff in dad's garage and around the barns. afternoon hit (not legal hunting time here in NY) and heard all kinds of toms gobbling on the hill working on through. if i could only have one pass on through huntable ground in the AM i'll be set. dumb birds don't know how smart they coincidently are! Turkeygirl
Yeah, didn't go out this AM...cold and windy out there. Working all weekend.
dbHunterNY
managed to make it out but nothing. with the wind, pouring rain, and this late in the season the birds didn't make any noise and hard to glass fields with the hay/grass being so tall. didn't hear or see a single turkey all weekend. only thing i managed to call in was a red fox looking to eat one of my decoys. we've got until the end of friday but i'm not sure if i'll be able to make it out this week in the mornings with work.
