Careers in the outdoors

I'll be off to college this fall and I'm still on the fence about what I'll be majoring in. I was thinking about becoming a teacher and coaching or getting a business degree, but I'd rather have a job that I could work outside or at least keep away from being stuck behind a desk. Does anyone have any ideas?

I sure do!

Become a panhandler. Save your money for an education and draw all the entitlements you will be afforded if you didn't quite make it in society.

No loans to pay back, taxes to pay and you will make more than a well educated college grad.

2 nd. choice? Become a politician. Get elected for two years and be set for life.

Lot of options depending on what you want to do but would try to major in something you know you will enjoy and be able to find a job in. My oldest daughter will be a senior in high school soon and graduate in 2014. She also wants to work outdoors and plans on being a game warden, at this point is planning on majoring in either wildlife management or wildlife biology. I keep telling her though that those state jobs may be hard to come by, she needs to have something to fall back on and should minor in something parallel that she would have no trouble with finding a job in like teaching science.

In my daughters situation she scored a 28 on her ACT the first time she took it and is carrying a 3.95 gpa while taking all honors and AP classes available to her. She could probably do anything she wants but still wants to be a game warden.

I believe the average student changes their major 4 times. There really isn't a need to declare right away unless your going into a specialized degree. I would suggest a marketing degree because its a blanket that translates into many career options.

True. I started out wanting a degree in Agriculture, then once I started college I changed it to Biology. I loved biology courses but I also knew that jobs with this degree are limited. I then switched my major again to Environmental Health. This is what Im graduating with in about 2 months. The degree is about 50/50 natural environmental health, and occupational safety and health. State jobs are ok, but they dont pay well. I could get a job with the state of KY fairly easily in their Division of Air Quality or Division of Water. But I could go get a factory job and make the same money.

The best advice I can give, is dont worry about declaring a major yet. Go take all of your general education required classes, get a taste of everything and figure out what you like. Then you can make a more informed decision. Take into account what you enjoy, and job availability.

Sounds like you definitely need to look into wildlife biology. That's what I wanted to do, but ended up not pursuing it because of the money and job outlook.

I started off in civil engineering, switched to teaching/coaching, and then switched to accounting. Graduated with both an accounting degree and a business degree last spring and am in the process of sitting for my CPA now.

If I could go back and do it again, id go into pharmacy or some higher specified medical field.

Let's put it this way...you don't know what God has planned for you. I went to college, got my Bachelor's in outdoor education/camp administration. A year after graduating went to school and became a RN and currently work as that. Not alot of permanent outdoor related jobs around here but I did work at a camp 5 summers - 3 as a counselor, 2 as the nurse, and loved it.
