Big news from me

Just wanted to let you all know I've pulled the trigger on a career change. I've been an automotive technician within 2 GM dealers for the past 8 years, with this one for the past 7 of those 8 years. Been getting a little tired of it over the past year or so, stress levels have been high with a lot of the dealer politics between them and GM etc, then crap rolls down hill from the dealer owners down to us. Anyone who's a mechanic, like Lynn would understand where I'm coming from. I'm only 26 with no family of my own, no mortgage etc, so I may as well try something else while I can, before I regret not trying it later down the road in life.

Anyways an opportunity passed my way over the past week and it was official as of yesterday, I handed my resignation to my current employer and accepted the position at my new job. Two weeks from this coming Monday I will start at my new job at Boats, Snowmobiles, ATV, PWC in Eganville & Ottawa as a parts and accessories specialist. They just announced an opening of a new store in Kingston (Muff's country) right on the St. Lawrence river, so my current position will probably be temporary for the time being as staff changes will be happening within the next few months. My goal is to eventually be a sales person for the boats, ATV's, UTV's. snowmobiles, PWC's etc that they sell. And maybe even go higher such as a business manager in future years. Always loved the recreation side of this industry, and as much as I love going to work, getting dirty and turning wrenches, I'm willing to drop the wrenches and give this a shot and see how it pans out. If it doesn't I may try the mechanical side of the recreation out. But for now, I'll be going to work in nice clothes, shoes, and no hat with gelled hair LOL. We'll see how it goes, but I'm feeling good about my decision and my future in this new world to me.

Wish me luck!

Career change EH? Can't say that I blame you after the day I just had. I can honestly say I never made an employment change which didn't work well for me. Albeit they were all within the auto world.

Probably the best was when I opened my own business in 1982. I have been in the business for 52 years and frankly I'm a little tired of it. I have a tremondous investment in equipment which becomes obsolete the day after you buy it, whining employees who get treated like family, increasing state regulations, customers who want it done now and pay later, increasing taxes, insurance, heat, electric, environmental fees, increasing parts prices, health insurance costs, and the list could go on and on. Not the dream world some picture it to be. OK, I have made a pretty good living but I have done it with good honest hard work. No handouts. I have never asked anyone to do something I haven't done or wouldn't do myself. I don't ask for respect, I earn it, at least I hope so.

Shaun, I wish you the best in your endeavor. However if it doesn't work out, come on over. I have a place for you.

Best of luck buddy,

Lynn

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Lynn, I know exactly what you mean, anything in the car business can be very stressful. If anything later on I hope to own my own business as well. I love the satisfaction of knowing I've helped someone, and I feel the only way of doing so and having a good career doing so in the business, is owning my own business. Gonna give this a whirl for a while and see what comes out of it, if not that's one of my considerations.

But I know you're only 2 hours away and I know how you do business!, I appreciate the invite so keep that door open for me buddy! ;)

Wish you nothing but the best Shaun! Things get a lot tougher for sure with a family to support. I'm looking at getting out of the automotive parts business myself, and the decision only gets harder to make the more years you invest in something. I'm sure you'll do well, wish you luck bud!

sounds like it could be a pretty refreshing change. eventually you could work toward being a regional factory rep for honda or whomever. your customers would then be the dealers. i'm sure things like benefits and stuff would be good.

from highschool into college i thought about looking into working as an engineer for one of the snowmobile manufacturers. i was even on a winning international collegiate competition team. past people from these teams went on to work for various snowmobile manufacturers.

i decided i didn't want to relocate to where they were and be away from all my family and friends. not much of anything where they are except a whole lot of cold and snow. it's good you didn't let it go on by with the wind though. Good luck buddy!

Shaun, if you want to own your own business why not start tomorrow? I can set you up with a deal I can't refuse!

BTW, today was a good day, we get those every now and then.

You might just like the machine shop race engine part of it. A lot of neat toys to play with.

Right now we are prepping a new Dart block for a 502" Chev. which will go to my friend Matt who is crew chief for NASCAR's # 16 Greg Biffle. It is for Matt's 69 Chevelle street car. With a little spray we are aiming for 1200 plus HP. He has a buddy who is another NASCAR crew chief and he wants to blow him into the weeds. It is kind of a secret project for now. That is why we are doing it up here. Matt grew up three doors away from me and he is a great guy. He and my son Marc are real close. Matt wants Marc to come work for him but I won't let Marc leave.
