dbHunterNY
I picked up a Down-N-Dirty Outdoors Boogieman Barred Owl call to locate turkeys this spring. stepped outside in the driveway and blew on it for about a half hour, before dark. Made every noise and owl could make using it and determined it works pretty good. I then jumped straight in the car to go to a indoor bow shoot. Wife called. Apparently she pulled in the driveway not long after i left. She spotted a barred owl camping out in the middle of the driveway. it got a little nervous as was coming down the driveway and stopped right next to it. it flew up into a tree that's right next to the driveway and sat there for a while until she finally went inside. she took a confirmation picture too. if it works for the owls it should work for the turkeys. we'll see come May. dbHunterNY
i don't know... do they taste good? see only took a picture of it... i would've tried though. that'd be an accomplishment getting the owl to shock gobble. that'd make me awesome. lol
Ravin R10 man
Heard they taste like Eagle... turkeys are not making any noise much here yet, normally crows shock gobble them on the roost here
dbHunterNY
haven't had as much luck with a crow call for a locator. owl seems to work better where i hunt... for whatever reason. seeing them fanned out here but little noise making. now that we're into April I expect that all to change. Rhino
Cool! LOL putting one on the table. Gotta agree that overall, an owl call will usually make a bird shock gobble over most anything else except thunder. Crow calls are a good 2nd for me but many times when I've gotten a bird to gobble at a crow call, they'll gobble the 1st time and then won't gobble at it again for a while. I'm still old school...I'm still making owl calls without using a call. One less thing to carry.

One thing that I've figured out is the call gives me more range, hooting and doing the typical 'who-who-cooks-for-you' sequence. What I've also figured out is a more agressive and louder owl 'laugh' will many times get a response when typical hooting won't. I think it's pretty difficult to do an owl 'laugh' with just your voice. I'm with you though... i like to carry light. I think something to help locate and set up on a bird is more important than having a half a dozen different calls with you to coax a bird from it's intended path. lots of calls i've found will work if the bird is already headed in your general direction. they can be pretty lazy. No disagreement here on the importance of finding one to work. Unless you're hunting areas with a lot of big fields, you need to hear them gobble to find one to try to work. My days of carrying a half dozen calls to work a bird were over a long time ago. Heck, since I switched to Ol' Tom turkey hunting outfits & their accessories, I don't wear a vest anymore. All those pockets in a turkey vest are just begging for something to put in them. Thinking about it though...got a 2nd call lanyard attached to each shirt & I only use one for my crow call. That extra one could be used for that owl call you got. May have to check it out for adding more volume when I need it...like windy days.
