wtnhunt
Noticed we have an antifreeze leak on our 2008 durango, it is Easter Sunday so not going to tear into it today. It has the 5.7 liter hemi, how common are these water pumps to go out at 5 years. It has 70,000 miles, I just had it in for the lifetime powertrain warranty inspection back in February and they found no problems. Not a real bad leak, but it obviously needs to be taken care of. Cannot see where it is leaking from from the top and best as I could tell from underneath it had antifreeze on the bottom side of the pump but I could not see the top radiator hose from the bottom either and it looks like it could be possible that it could be leaking down onto the pump from the hose. Looked up the pump at a few places and it is being suggested at autozone that if it is the pump that the fan clutch also be replaced? LETMGROW
70K? Could very well be the pump. If the fan clutch is not loose or noisy use it. A good light with a pressure test and a look from top to bottom should reveal the source of the leak. Lynn
Shaun_300
Haven't heard of any common problems with the Hemi's, could very well be the pump like Lynn said. Grab the fan and move it up and down, if the waterpump pulley moves the bearings are loose and will cause a leak (the Trailblazer/Envoys are bad for that.) Might be able to rent a pressure tester from Autozone. Wouldn't hurt to get some tracer dye and add it to the rad before you rent it to make it easier to pin point. wtnhunt
Thank you both for the help. There are a couple hoses up above the pump and top hose that keep me from being able to see where it is leaking from. Might be able to get a mirror in, dunno. I will pull the air filter box and may have to take the fan shroud off this weekend to get a better look. Local autozone shows they don't have a couple different pressure testers for sale that are not in stock but can be ordered, I will give them a call and see if they have a "loaner". Same goes for the water pump, not in stock. Hate to get into it on Saturday and find out I have to have a new pump and have to wait 3-5 days for it to come in, but looks like I may not have much choice if that is the problem. Would be nice if it was the hose, fraction of the cost but guessing I won't be that lucky.
wtnhunt
Just got home, and the wife got home with the durango I went out and grabbed a fan blade and pulled on it up and down and the shaft gave probably 1/8th of an inch, bearings in the pump must be bad like Shaun said. So I guess I am gonna go ahead and just order the lifetime pump. Fan clutch is another 40 some odd dollars. Guessing our lifetime powertrain warranty does not cover this? William: You should check with your dealer on that warranty. I think it should be covered. I can't speak for them though. You should have a list of covered and not covered items with the warranty paperwork. Lynn

Lynn Good thing I guess that I checked online for availabilty again, autozone and O'reilly auto parts yesterday afternoon late both showed they had them in stock in the stores so I did not order one. Called the dealership this morning and service advisor said it should be covered, said he could not recall one yet that was not covered. wtnhunt
Warranty covered it. Water pump was bad. Saved me the $100 for the pump + $ for antifreeze and also spared me the aggravation of having to get into it over the weekend while thinking about turkey hunting.
