A day in the life of me!

Not sure if all of you saw my thread that I was leaving the automotive business or not, going to try something different. I truly love what I do to an extent, mainly powertrain issues, driveability etc. Especially when it comes down to engines and transmissions, that's where I show my greatest interest and skill.

Just so happened I have a burst of engines and transmissions this week, and a transmission just came in this afternoon that I will get at tomorrow and take some pics to share.

Had a 2010 Equinox come in Monday that I got, burning lots of oil, typical for a 4 cylinder 2.4L Ecotec in some of the 2010's. Tore the head off, cylinders are glazed, new 2011 engine is on order and hopefully will have it Friday. Got a 2003 Silverado yesterday going through coolant, no external leaks found, removed valve covers, saw obvious signs that coolant is mixing with the engine oil. Took rocker arms and pushrods out, pressure tested cooling system and found a cracked cylinder head. So I tore that all apart this morning ready to put back together in the morning with a used head.

Lots of stuff on my toolbox, basically from the middle to the left is all the engine parts from the Equinox and from the middle to the right is Silverado parts.

You can see the two heads on my bench, the one standing up is from the Silverado and the one laying down is from the Equinox.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll take some shots of the guts of a transmission to share.

Freakin' head still didn't show up today for the Silverado!!! Engine showed up for the Equinox though. Busy day today, had an apprentice tear the transmission out of the 2010 Silverado today while I did other stuff, he had it out aruond 10:00. We have a co-op student from the high school that was really interested what the inside of one looked like so I handed him the tools and said: Here, you take it apart! He was thrilled, I showed him how all the parts and how everything works, actually seemed like he understood it after we were through with it. After lunch I tacked the Equinox, tore the subframe out onto the operating table, old engine is out, new one is bolted up and almost ready to put the subframe back in the vehicle in the morning.

Should have it running by 10 or 11am hopefully, parts will be in for the Silverado transmission, hoping to have that rebuilt and installed and out the door by the end of the day. I'll get some pics of the transmission tomorrow. Kinda fun sharing what I do for a living! :)

Bet you will miss it Shaun. Always said if I ever won the lottery I would build myself a shop where I could work on engines and stuff for fun. Again, best of luck with the new career.

Haha yeah if have to do better than stock Shaun! Never was too imposed with the 5.3 really. I think they should have stuck with the 305/350 small block with tbi as the half ton workhorse.

Dunno that I will ever get rid of my 98, last year they used the 350 if I am not mistaken.

Planning on doing some work on the side. Had an awesome first day at work. Can't believe I scored this job, it is amazing! So much fun, staff is fun and friendly, we're constantly joking around, felt like I had been there for years. Picked up fast on the system.

Sure is hard staring at all the toys though. There's a Nitro Z7 with a 150 Merc on a spinner in the showroom right in front of my desk. Have to wipe up the puddle of drool on my desk everytime I turn around lol. That and the $104,000 wake board boat. Lotsa toys, hopefully someday!

They are great too, get to take anything out of the used inventory to use for the weekend. Boats, snowmobiles, Seadoos, 4 wheelers, Side by sides. Pretty fun spot to work! :clown:  Owner always has the staff get together for four wheeler runs and snowmobile runs, if you don't have one, just grab one and come along!!
