redbeard
With this my 25th year totin' around my 12 pound Remington SP10 cannon, I'm thinkin' of retiring the old gal. Any suggestions on what shoots good and straight and with what chokes and ammo would be welcomed. Thinking of 12 gauge but a 20 isn't out of the question. Thanks

FSU_Seminole
With this my 25th year totin' around my 12 pound Remington SP10 cannon, I'm thinkin' of retiring the old gal. Any suggestions on what shoots good and straight and with what chokes and ammo would be welcomed. Thinking of 12 gauge but a 20 isn't out of the question. Thanks Honestly who much money do you want to spend? Believe me when I tell you the Benelli Vincis are worth their weight in gold. I have the standard Vinci with a 24inch barrel. It only shoots 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells but I feel like you don't need 3.5 inch shells for turkeys. Pros This shotgun feels great!!!! It weighs a mere 6lbs. You can run and gun with it all day & you wont know its on your shoulder. Well balanced, shoots straight Impervious to punishment. Mud, snow, ice, rain. Incredibly easy to break down and clean. You could train a monkey to clean a Vinci, the inertia system has no moving parts that are necessary to take off and clean regularly. I use heavi shot chokes with hevi shot #5 or winchester double x loads # 6s. Even the 2 3/4 winchester loads shoot great on paper at 40 yards with a hevi shot choke. Cons Price 1299..........BTW you do NOT need the kick off system if you use a ported choke, it greatly reduces recoil. The Vinci isn't an eye catcher, its sorta weird looking. Its not a pretty as some of the Remington Browning or & Mossburg guns.
Rhino
Dean...for that very same reason I retired my old 1187 (3" mag) & bought a Benelli SBEII (3.5" mag) about 5 years ago. It's several pounds lighter than my old 1187. The 1187 is now my backup turkey gun. Ya never know. The SBEII has a good recoil reducing system on it...needed for a light weight shotgun shooting Nitro 3.5" mag loads. BTW...I didn't like the feel of the Beretta Extrema...forearm's too big for my liking. I was shooting a Rhino .660 choke with my old Nitro loads (H517 4x5x7). Couldn't help myself...a couple of weeks ago I switched to an Indian Creek .665 shooting Nitro's new Mega-Weight/Hevi-Shot...their Item# MH517 4x5x6x7. Awesome uniform pattern at 35 yards after I sighted it in with my holosight. Haven't shot it on paper beyond that yet but the pattern is a little better at 35 (a little more uniform) compared to my old loads with the Rhino choke at the same distance. I have shot the old loads out to 50 yards on paper. Nitro says their new mega-weight loads deliver 15% more down range energy than any loads they've offered before. My 2nd MS bird fell to it but it was only a 21 yard kill. At that range, a .410 would have done the job. The only issue with my SBEII is I need to keep it clean, mainly the magazine. If the magazine gets too much grit in it, the red plastic stop on the shell loading end wants to hang up, not allowing me to push shells in it easily. If you wait instead of cleaning it, it will get to the point where you can't load shells in the magazine. Would suck to be caught hunting turkeys using a semi-auto as a single shot. Just about everyone cleans their guns before they put them away after the season. For insurance, I always take down the magazine before the season to make sure it's clean. After that I haven't had an issue with it during the season except when I took an accidental back flip in a mud hole a few weeks ago during a heavy rain. LONG story but I had to hose myself and my gun off before I could break my Benelli down to clean it. Not sure what all the mud on my cloths would have done to my washing machine. dbHunterNY
what Al said with the SBEII.... i know of a lot that use it. I've been experimenting with my Benelli supernova 12ga. more of a pump guy. i know it's locked up solid and will always cycle. got lots of chokes for it... i think best i've counted was 100+ pellets in an 8 in circle at 40 yards with a Carlson's Dead Coyote non-ported tube and Federal Flight Control Heavy weight 1-5/8oz 3" #5s. Playing around with a PureGold ported .670 choke and a Carlson's ported .665 choke and various hevi-13 now. don't have numbers yet though. use a burris speed bead for a red dot reflex style sight. for point of impact changes between combos. VTbrshbstr
Recommendations for new turkey gun.......... Can't go wrong with the good ol' 870. The R3 recoil pad is awesome for recoil pad works really well and I haven't shot one with Shure Shot stocks yet but I have handled a few and they feel awesome. The stocks can be had for about a $100.00 bucks so If not shooting 3.5 inch shells or having a full camo gun is a big deal to you I would look for a good deal on a used Express mag, put Shure Shots and a good choke in it have a gobbler killing machine for less than $500.00 bucks! dlriggins
Mossberg 935 inexpensive and packs a punch. Mine sports an undertaker choke tube and Bushnell trx red dot. tried to post pic. fail on my end Edited April 12, 2013 by dlriggins
dbHunterNY
always peaked my interest is a camo dipped over under shotgun setup for turkeys. fewer moving parts, balanced well, dependable, lighter, and if you have to shoot more than twice the bird is most likely gone. PotashRLS
Highly recommend the Mossberg 835 Turkey Shotguns. They come in the standard camo stocks, thumbhole stocks and Tactical Stocks. They are light and allow you to shoot a variety of 2 3/4" - 3 1/2" loads. You can search the web for reviews and I guarantee you will find a truck load of great reviews. It has the overbored barrel and patterns well. If you experiment a little I can assure you that you'll find a choke/ammo combination that is consistent at 50 yards. The short 20" barrels are great when running & gunning or sitting in a small blind. The Mossberg 535s are getting close to the same reviews. HUNTINGMAN
I'm kinda partial to my benelli super nova. I have turkey hunted with it for going on 5 years now I think and it has been bullet proof. I put a primos jellyhead choke tube in the end of it and it likes about any round you can put through it. I bought some snap on truglo sights that go on the vent rib for turkey hunting, this makes it a multiple use gun just by snapping off the sights and changing out the chokes. I opted for the steady grip stock and it is great for sitting in the ready position waiting on that big gobbler.
