KYLimbHanger
I decided to bust $2 and examine the bb's inside a Remington HEVI SHOT 3 inch 1.5 oz. #4. I was amazed in what I saw. There were 187 bb's total. 51 of the bb's were deformed. That is 27% of the total They had a bubble on the side of them. One wasn't even round, it looked like a small metallic pinto bean. Weird? There was alot of buffer in the shotshell. But, what good is buffer if the bb is already deformed before it is even shot??? This may explain why Hevi Shot doesn't shoot well in some peoples shotguns. I understand that HeviShot is a great turkey load and many people swear by it. But, LOOK AT THE BB's!!!! I just thought this was worth displaying. It surprised me, maybe it will surprise you. I am just astounded with the quality control department at Remington Arms. How did this stuff pass into production??? I also included a few pics of good ole copper-plated lead from a Federal Flight Control #6 for those who don't know what it looks like......Nice and Round What do you all think???? This pic does not show the total amount of bb's. Only a sample. Close Up
PAbowhunter4life
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic) Wow', that's definitely interesting to see. Glad I shoot Nitro shells. Care to buy a box of 5 of them and cut one open for me to see what's in them? lol
KYLimbHanger
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic) Well, I was gonna see if someone would cut open a Nitro 4x5x7 Hevi Shot to see if they are deformed as well. Anyone?? Anxious to see.

Guest ronin
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! That is how HeviShot is supposed to be. There is a full explanation to include complete ballistic comparisons in one of last years NRA magazines, can't remember which right now. I personally like the stuff. I get kill shots at much longer range.

PAbowhunter4life
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic) I actually remember seeing something written about this as well. Supposedly the odd shape helps it to fly better. Now before someone jumps down my throat this is not my opinion, it is what I read, and I believe it was in the same mag that Ronin mentioned. Strut10
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic) Yep. I read the same article. They claim that, even though the stuff looks like welding slag, the shape does not negatively affect its flight. They think it may actually help some. Go figger??????? snapper
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic) Alot of your perfectly round bb's will be deformed before they leave the end of your barrel. When the shot is fired, any and all bb's hitting the forcing cone or a tight choke will be deformed when they come out of the end of the barrel. So it really doesn't matter what they look like inside the shell.
JimT
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic) I heard that they are supposed to be like thaty also.... I know Hevi Shot is awsome stuff on waterfowl. I would have to assume the same for turkeys.
13littleones
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic) I may be wrong.. but the reason the shot takes on an oblong shape is because when they make the shot...the steel is harder than lead and it "hardens faster" when the hot metal hits the water to make the pellets....that is why you end up with odd looking pellets... western NY bowhunter
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! Yep...that's how they're supposed to be. I can't shoot the hevishot outta my comp-n-choke, but I definately plan on giving the new Federals a try in the next week or two.
maytom
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! Ronin is 100% correct, hevishot is formed like that because it is way hotter when being made than lead, and can't be used in a drop tower like conventional lead pellets are made. They would need a tower a few thousand feet tall so the shot could cool down before landing in a water tank below!! That's why the shot looks the way it does. Either way, it doesn't harm your barrel or choke, and as far as patterns go, they sure out do the lead shot by a long shot!!! I wouldn't worry about the looks at all!! carbonhunter
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic) [ QUOTE ] Environmetal makes Hevi-Shot for themselves, Remington and Nitro...Soooo...I would venture a guess that Nitro's shot looks the same as Remington's...Hevi-Shot is a Trade mark name registered to Environmetal...Thats why Winchester and Federal can't call their new "Heavy Shot" loads Hevi-Shot [/ QUOTE ] Thats what ALL hevishot looka like, dosnt matter if your paying $25 a box or $80......HMM, cant imagine that stuff would do anything to a barrel. You guys with questions about Hevi shot should Pm AJ, or go looking through some waterfowl sites, like the Refuge. There are the guys that have done some SERIOUS testing with the stuff. maddhunter
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! I opened one of my #5 Hevi-Shot shells and they are much more uniform in shape than KY limbhanger's pics but what I didn't like was it had every size in it from about 7 1/2 to BB not what I expected. Sure the shot that is the right size will perform to the specs but what about the smaller or bigger ones? Seems to me the smaller ones would shoot higher and the larger ones lower. No wonder I didn't like the pattern I got from them.
lil hunter
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! I have always heard Hevi-shot was all different sizes and shapes. Never seen pictures though, thanks for sharing.....From all the reviews I've seen, it apperently doesn't affect the pattern, and energy too much. HeviShot
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! I don't care if it is square or triangled I kill turkey's with it. They can't see it coming anyway.
AJ
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! This is old news. It was brought up when Hevi Shot first came out. As far as why it won't pattern in some peoples gun is they are not using the correct choke/shot size combination. No one can argue with the performance of the stuff, so what does it matter how ugly the shot is? Yes Nitro Company's ammo looks like that also. It is not a bad QC at Remington, its just how Hevi Shot looks.
redbeard
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! Doesn't surprise me in the least, that stuff patterned like crap in my son's 1300. Told Remington about it in a dissatisfied letter and you know what they did.......removed my turkey photo from their website.
redbeard
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! [ QUOTE ] I wouldn't worry about the looks at all!! [/ QUOTE ] That doesn't make it fly straight. It's a proven fact round pellets fly and stay more uniformed to point of impact. Would that make you worry.........all that said, if it works in your gun, no problems here.

huntn4bucks
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! We were just having this same discussion the other day at work. Good post! I've killed several turkeys with both Copper plated lead and Remington Hevi-shot. I recently pattern my Benelli SBE with Fed Heavy Weight and Fed Copper plated lead, both with flite-contol technology, and both of them patterned better than the Rem Hevi-shot. When it came down to it, the Fed lead load patterned better than the Heavy Weight load. That's great news to me because it's about $15 a box cheaper! My brother's Benelli patterns really well with Rem Hevi-shot so I told him he could have the three shells I have left...I'm switching to Federals.
