COEngineer
At least it is in Iowa: Iowan who fatally shot dog on Christmas Eve is found guilty of abuse - Omaha.com
wtnhunt
Story does not add up, he got the gun and shells from his garage and went back out and shot the dog? Dog was leaving when he shot and may not have even been the one that growled at him? I agree with having the ability to defend yourself and property but this does not sound like he was in danger. Illegal to shoot dogs on your property here, unless they are harming you or your livestock. Have a real problem with wild dog packs and coydogs here. stevebeilgard
a classic example of s.s.s. shoot, shovel, & shutup. personally, i would not shoot a dog who was trying to leave and not coming at me. but, if i did, (and i have) i'd never admit i shot a thing. "yep, i heard a shot" is about all i'd tell anyone. next thing you'll be reading is about the million dollar civil law suit about to be filed. COEngineer
I guess I tend to see things in black and white. If the dog was on his property and it was not welcome, then he has every right to shoot it. The only "abuse" was not killing it humanely - it made it to the vet (he probably used bird shot). Even so, it is his property, the dog was not welcome...end of story. IMO Not saying I would have done the same thing (in fact I have been in the same situation and have not shot the dog), but I defend his right to be an ass. Some states as crazy as it is it is simply not legal, Tennessee is one of those states. I agree with what you are saying though, unwelcome dogs or other potentially dangerous critters on your property should be able to be dealt with and also agree that should be done as humanely as possible. midwesthunter815
Illegal to shoot dogs on your own property? That guy must have a dog who has never growled. If he was truly fearful of a growl without the dog making any threatening moves he has never had any encounter with a dog. That's a completely spineless move and he should get the stiffest penalty he can get. Yet should also remove all the pets from the man's (if you can call him one) house. Ravin R10 man
dog chasing deer is a dead dog.....we had males come over when ours would come in heat when I was young....funny how a tight rubber band can stop that urge...their "interest" would just drop off
hoosierhunter
Illegal to shoot dogs on your own property? Mind you this is the state that also allows known trespassing to retrieve property. I.E yote dogs, tracking game, etc. A great deal of Iowa's laws are a joke, but they have big deer and I want to hunt there so........ Who decides when you are afraid of a dog? You or someone who wasn't there? I agree that this guy probably overreacted, but that doesn't mean he did anything legally wrong, IMO. wtnhunt
but that doesn't mean he did anything legally wrong, IMO. Must be illegal in Iowa. State laws vary, it is not legal to shoot a dog on your property in Tennessee. Would be wise to know the laws in your states before doing these type things. fwiw from the link you provided, this man evidently had a history with being upset with dogs running in his yard from the testimony of the deputy, probably played into the verdict. Adjam5
We are not allowed to shoot dogs here in NYS...Even if they are chasing deer during hunting season. Now...This past fall I shot a pitbull that was running with coyotes...Yes it was with a pack of yotes. The Alpha was shot first on a Monday by another in my camp. Weds morning the same pack came trotting up the trail and I dropped a bobbed tail dog(with a funny head I thought) that I thought was a mangy yote. Turns out it was a Pitbull. I asked a DEC officer about the legality of it all. He said shooting dogs is a no no generally here in NYS. BUT...If they are running with yotes...They are fair game. It should have picked better friends to hang out with. We ringed the neck looking for a chip. No chip, no collar VERY muscular and heavy. This was on family land.
