Pro-Bush Group Overstates Social Security Shortfall

Summary

In a new TV ad, Progress for America exaggerates the true state of Social Security's finances by comparing it to the Titanic. The ad claims the system will go "bankrupt" if nothing is done and that we must rescue the program "before it hits the iceberg." Actually, neutral experts predict the system can pay between 70 and 80 percent of currently scheduled benefits even if the Trust Fund is exhausted, which isn't predicted to happen for another 37 years, at least.

The ad also touts Bush's plan for "voluntary personal retirement accounts" as though that would improve the system's finances. But even the White House now acknowledges that individual accounts alone do nothing to fix the system's long-term financial shortfall.

Sure, it won't help the system, but it will help the individual. Screw the system, I want my money.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats pretty much how i feel. I have almost 43 years until Im eligible for SS, without private accounts I'll never see a dime. The system does plenty to screw the hard working man, I'm all for screwing the system.

Pretty well the same thoughts here. At 35, if they let me invest my money in private accounts it would better benefit me and my family.

So if the system can pay out 80 percent of benefits for 37 years, then what confused.gif

If you think that way then yes - you are screw'd.

Do you believe for one second that I'm counting on anything from the government when I retire? You're off your rocker if you think so.

You already have a multitude of options out here, IRA's, 401k's, stocks and securities.....you have to plan your future and most of all you can't rely on anyone or anything, especially when it's coming from a politian.

You have the right, the freedom and you live in the most opportunistic country in the world to achieve financial security - if you only get off this "government-****" kick.

I don't care what you think or believe in but the plain truth is "equality" amoung socieities has never exsisted and never will.

Some employers do not offer 401k's PH. Sure there are other options like you suggest like IRA's. My wife and I are investing and have been for quite some time, but the money we are paying in to SS is OUR money at least part of it is supposed to be for our retirement. It just is not in any way right for us to have to pay and know that we will never get any return unless something is done to fix it soon. Why in the heck should we have to carry these others and expect the system to be let alone to self destruct to the point that we will get nothing?

Re: Pro-Bush Group Overstates Social Security Shor

wtn - In no way am I saying Social Security is right and yes, this is YOUR money and YOU should have some say-so in how it's being used. If it were up to me, you would have ALL SAY-SO in how it's used. The problem is that WE'VE allowed our government to dictate to US how it's going to be used - that needs to be changed and while Bush's answer isn't the solution to this problem, it is a step in the right direction.

All I was saying was - if you're looking to the government to insure your financial status in your later years - you're screwed.

I agree with the completely!

The biggest farce and people believe it is that you have a social security ACCOUNT! There is NO such thing as a SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT IN YOUR NAME! Never has been and never will be!

Everything is dumped together and it is spent, borrowed and who knows what by the legislature! The President cannont spend ONE single penny!

You don't have ANY control how the money you have paid into social security is spent! That is why I would be for private accounts completely because that would be YOUR ACCOUNT!! You own it and you control it!

You are right about that. Dont think I ever said I was counting on relying on the government for security upon my retirement, but it would be nice to at least get back a positive return on the money we are paying in rather than nothing at all.

Would you really? How do you know you would be able to control it? How do you know that if the government gets so far in debt that they won't take that money just as fast? I just think trusting the government with something as personal as a Private Retirement Account is foolish because the government is the government, yes, your name would be on the account, but it would be set up and run by the government, they would control how much you got, heck, their even gonna control how much you can put in. Thats not control over your retirement.

YES I or you would. That is why the democrats are so against it. They want the control that President Bush is trying to give to thepeople anmd cannot stand the idea of not being in control of our money.
