First day out,, WTH!!!!

FINALLY, after 5 years of scraping and breaking (my back), I got the chance to try a real turkey hunt with my son. I watched enough videos and did enough reading to get me ready. We rented a cabin in southern Ohio, and despite 10 hours driving, we even got the chance to do some scouting. Monday morning, we get out spot, I set up the decoy, sit down and start out with a soft cluck. Waited about 10 minutes, another soft cluck. On the third try, gobble!!!. Needless to say I was screaming inside "Holy sh*t, it works!!!!". My son was tingling with excitement. I did a soft three yelp call, gobble gobble!!!. He was definitely getting closer. All the sudden, no response for rest of morning.

Here is where it gets interesting. Next morning, same spot, moved decoy to place where I assume the tom would see it based on the direction of his responses on the morning before. Started with a soft cluck, wait ten minutes, another soft cluck pattern. Next thing, three huge does come down. As soon as the one in front sees the decoy, she freaks out. Makes some "hush" sound, like a sneeze. The deer don't take off, just are literally freaked out by decoy. They eventually simply walk around it staring at decoy, with lead doe making that sound. I start the cluck pattern again, gobble gobble!!, tom is back. For every cluck, a response, he was definitely coming our way. To get to the point, as soon as the tom pops out of the brush, circles a tree, see's the decoy, it jumped back, and took off.

We came home empty handed, but what an education. We enjoyed every second of it. So any advise? explanations?

Thanks
