Lucky in Missouri

Well I was able to get home to Missouri for a few days a couple of weeks ago with my dad and brother. The season in SW Missouri has been miserable! All of the strutting and gobbling was basically done by the time I got there at the end of the first week. But the first day out this guy along with a couple other toms were out for a midday stroll and just happened to walk by me! Shot him at about 40 yards and he is my biggest to date. Weighed about 25 lbs, 11.5 inch beard with 1.5 inch spurs. I had a couple more days of sitting with my dad before the beginning of the second week started, and then one day of the second week (in Missouri you can only kill 1 bird the first week) but only heard a few more gobbles and never had another Tom come in closer than around 100 yards or so. But grateful I got the bird I did!

I almost passed him up too. I never did get a real good look at him. He was coming thru a lane of winter oats and I never fully saw his beard. My dad has birds that are bigger than this. One of those is what I was after but I knew the weather forecast for the next 3 days wasn't real good. So I took him and he got bigger than I thought he was when I got up to him. Now I'm hoping to fill my Kansas tag. Maybe I can get my first Rio this year.

Zizzer: Just west of Springfield. Judging by your name, any chance you are from the west plains area?
