JimT
Anyone done it? I saw that alot of people do hunt black bears with one. Not that I am going to, but I was just wondering if anyone here does. I will be using my mz this year. Anxious to see what a 250gr ShockWave in front of 150gr of pyrodex will do to one. fisherguy
Re: Bear hunting with a 25-06? never shot one with a rifle. A 25-05 would do alright since bears are quite thin skinned, and not particularly heavy in bone structure. I was going to rifle hunt i would probably want a bit more gun just so i had a bit more margin for error, but a 25-06 in the vitals should put a bear down fast. AJ
Re: Bear hunting with a 25-06? Nowdays, I feel bullet selection means a lot more than cartridge selection does. A Nosler 115 or 120 gr Partition will kill them as dead as anything else will. Like Fisherguy said, bullet placement means everything. JimT
Re: Bear hunting with a 25-06? Thanks guys. I was not saying that I would not hunt a bear with one, I was just stating that I will be using the mz this year. I know a 25 will whack a bear no problem with the right hit. Guest agdexter
Re: Bear hunting with a 25-06? I know this was clearly said in the beginning. But because you can does not equate to you should. I killed one black bear and that was with a .30-06 and a 180 grain bullet. He didn't go far. However, the guides at the camp were much more comfortable with my using my .30-06 rather than the .270 I wanted to. Their stated reasons. Less likely to lose a wounded bear and they have to go into the woods and find them. It is their stated preference to use a gun that will plant them on the spot. Even so, I had a friend who made a good hit with a .300 win mag that left blood everywhere. Tracked that bear a long way into the woods and into a swamp before they finally gave up. Guide wasn't happy, my friend wasn't happy and I am sure the bear wasn't happy. You could kill a bear with a .22, doesn't mean it should in any way be considered a weapon of choice. agdexter
strubedog
Re: Bear hunting with a 25-06? If I was going to be walking in the woods/mountains on a bear hunt and accidently snuck up on one I would rather have a 300 mag minimum to stop him before he gets to me. I guess just make sure you are comfortable with whatever you are using a take a shot that offers a good clean kill.
