Zizzer59
Anyone here ever built a Canoe trailer? I'm planning on buying 2 canoes in the morning and I can only carry one on the top of the ole bronco 2 and I don't want to dish out a thousand bucks for a factory made one. Anyone have any experience in the matter?
Ravin R10 man
I've seen them hauled upside down on a little flat bed snowmobile trailer..have to extend the hitch about 8 feet..lots of older ones around for a couple hundred$..cost you that much to make one
Jeramie
I agree, use an old jetski trailer or something to that effect. Craigslist should provide some in your area. If not buy a trailer that can be a duel purpose. I would buy something like a 5x8 used lawn trailer and then weld up "holder" that can be pinned on. It would also give you a platform to hold other things like ice chest, life vest, etc. If you're handy with this sort of thing I can imagine this could be done for something like $500 - $600 and again, you have a lawn trailer when youre not hauling a canoe. The Bug House
Homemade Canoe Trailer? I have a couple kayaks and a canoe that I transport on a regular basis. I have J racks for the kayaks which work very well. My canoe is an 18' aluminum which weighs a ton. I use a 5'X8' "landscape" trailer, the gate/ramp folds over onto the trailer bed. I lash 2 lengths of pressure treated 4"X4" crossways on the front and rear of the trailer. I used my cordless circular saw to cut a groove in each piece and make sure they are lined up. I slide the keel right into the grooves and secure with 2 ratchet straps. It is rock solid and easy to load / unload by myself!
wtnhunt
No experience with building a canoe trailer, but agree with what Jeramie says. If it were me I would find a 5x10 utility trailer and build a rack that could be pinned to the trailer and taken off when not using it for canoes. If you can weld and have the materials you could probably come out ok, if not you may be better off buying the factory made setup.
Zizzer59
Homemade Canoe Trailer? All the old canoe trailers around here go for like $600. I went to the lake today and passed a guys house and it looked like he had boat graveyard. I saw a couple of old boat trailers and was thinking about seeing if he would sell one real cheap.
