The Bug House
Valedictorian Shocks Crowd at High School Graduation What about my right as an American to not have OTHER PEOPLES BELIEFS shoved down my throat at a PUBLIC school. This misguided young man may have taken his 15 seconds in the spotlight to express his personal beliefs (in front of a crown of overwhelming supporters, READ: Cowardice) ... But in doing so, he violated the Constitution. I can only imagine your responses if he whipped out a prayer rug & Koran, turned towards Mecca, a kneeled in prayer. If he wanted to drag religion into his education, why didn't he attend a religious school?
Dawg
But in doing so, he violated the Constitution. Just for fun.....explain your reasoning here.
VermontHunter
And Bug I love how you re-wrote the Pledge of allegiance to fit your beliefs .... Hhmm ,, and No the young man wasn't misguided and you need to explain to all of us AMERICANS that served this country how he violated the constitution ... This country was found under God,, anyway you want to spin it ... And just for the record this is the correct version of the pledge ,, not the version you seem to want everyone to use ... " I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Why is it public schools should have the right to tell me or my kids what they can or cannot say in regards to beliefs? Since you are an atheist, would you believe it being right for a public school to tell your kids they cannot tell another student there is no God if a conversation were to come up? That their beliefs should not be allowed to be discussed regardless.... Flipside would be infringing on yours or your children's rights. Yeah, would like to hear how a student violated your rights with a speech. Just like anything else if anyone(including you) did not want to hear it they have the right to walk away or stick their fingers in their ears or just tune it out or just not click the link. Your example of a muslim; so what if it was a muslim student and rather than giving a speech they were stopped by the school, what then....? I would speculate such a what if scenario would involve the aclu and lawsuits against those who stopped the student. What gives with some religions being protected while Christianity time and time again gets slammed? There is a double standard.

Tominator
Gutsy kid. I know, at our school at least, the speeches are approved by the senior class advisor just to make sure there's no profanity or anything inappropriate. They are given a lot of leeway. I'd say in listening to 20+ valedictorian speeches over the years, 99% of them address how that one person can represent and communicate the hopes and dreams of his or her class and community. There was no violation of The Constitution IMHO. The student had the right to speak and that right wasn't abused. Like it or not, this country was founded on Christian principles, if you don't like it, fine, you have that right. If you don't like or believe in the Lord's prayer, don't listen, simple as that. On another note, the topic of another thread if I cared to banter, which I don't, I often listen to an evangelist on the radio. I don't know his name, but he usually has a good message. I caught him yesterday and his point yesterday was--there are no such things as atheists. There is light in everyone. Who put it there? 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 1 John 9-13 The atheist is the one who is uncomfortable with the truth, who is not secure with his or her light.
