While I am sitting here, impatiently waiting on Oct 15th to arrive, I began to wonder when bow season starts in the northern states. In my area of Ms. The deer season runs from Oct 15 th through feb 15th. I know the rut starts a lot earlier up there than here so I figure you guys are prolly getting close to hunting season huh?

The areas I've been hunting in MS are the 10/1 through 1/31 dates. Not sure if I'll hunt MS or not this year since I'm still looking for a new place close to home.

I will be spending lots of time hunting Missouri though. Here's their dates.

1st bow season - 9/15 through 11/15

Gun season - 11/16 through 11/26

2nd bow season - 11/27 through 1/15

Antlerless only Gun season - 11/27 through 12/8. Yep...runs during part of the 2nd bow season.

Alternative Weapons season - 12/21 through 12/31.

If you didn't fill your gun season buck tag you can use it during the Alternative Weapons season. If you did, you're doe hunting. Also runs during part of the 2nd bow season too. Alternative weapons are muzzleloaders, pistols, crossbows, and legal archery weapons. About everything except legal centerfire rifles.

A new legal weapon this year during the bow seasons is an Atlatls, which is defined as a rod or narrow board like device used to launch, through a throwing motion, a dart 5 to 8 feet long. I have no idea who pushed for legalizing that weapon. Crossbows still aren't legal during bow seasons.

Someone who really wanted to go primitive!

Bow season starts Sept. 27th here.

For some reason I thought you guys up north started early and the season was really short.

I think, excluding Florida which has a unusually early rut, the state that opens the earliest is one of the Carolina's that opens in mid Aug. MS has strange rutting dates too varying from the 1st week of Dec. through the 1st week in Feb. depending on which part of the state you're checking out. The vast majority of the rest of the country has Nov. rutting periods.

As far as the length of the seasons goes...if you're talking gun, MS has a long generous gun season compared to most other states. If you're talking all weapons combined, a hunter has time to get his licks in during their state's fall seasons. I think a few states have resident draws for tags limiting their opportunities though. Although a hunter may have a comparable amount of time to hunt their state like you do yours (MS), they're limited by bag limits more so than you are. Some states are 1 buck only states for residents then you're done buck hunting.

Is the northern part of my county the peak rut is july 22nd but in my part it is august 12th. If you go into the panhandle the rut gets all the way up to February 14th. The thing is the deer down here dont respond to scents. Why i dont know. But they just dont. In GA i know they do because we had a lease up there and my 1st deer cam into scent. We get to hunt most of it though.
