Pre season routine.

I haven't touched my bow since last season, but started shooting it the other day.. I'll hang 2 stands this weekend, then be out 2 weekends after that for opening weekend. As hot as it is, it's hard to pass up being back in a tree stand. I did wise up this year and get a couple of ladder stands instead of trying to use a climber in August in the Low country of SC.

i'll put up some stands and make sure shooting openings (not lanes) are cut at different locations I have a stand or use a climber at. i'm done by the first week in August. I don't start running cams until September after the deer change their patterns a little. then before opening day I'll scout from a distance to see what stand locations are getting more activity or that I should be in. then once I hunt each stand for the first time is when I check the cam there or in the area.

Now I can tell her there are a few more whitetail junkies out there besides me. I got a few stands I keep in reserve to use when I see a new location start heating up. I got to get some cams up and running, and I got to get some feeders put in on the girlfriends stand and the kids stands. I've sat a few afternoons watching fields and open bottoms and have been seeing some good bucks that I thought might have been killed in season. My bow is shooting lasers and the trigger finger is getting daily workouts. This guy is pumped

...another pre-season prep thing I left out. I shoot unmarked yardage 3D outdoor shoots/leagues during the summer leading into the fall. I've got another shoot for a league i'm in this afternoon. mostly on the ground but there are a couple elevated platforms to shoot from and then one steep down hill for the spot that usually has the last couple of targets. aside from putting deer or targets out at your stand (which isn't feasible) it's the best practice there is.

Mathews XT Man, Buda here. Say, I shoot the XT. The XT has been my only bow. Picked it up the year it came out. Never bow hunted in my life. My buddy got me started. He shoots Mathews, too. Told myself that if I was going to pick up this sport, I wanted the best. Take care!

So yesterday I went to scout out the land I posted a picture of the other day. I was about 50 yards from the corn and I jumped what looked to be an 8pt that already has some nice bone. Do you think this will affect his movement/activity in that field? I know its still early so it shouldn't affect it much. I also checked out the bean field and watched a few smaller bucks for a while.

First time out scouting, think it went pretty well.

That's good to hear.

So I just purchased my first trail cam. Just a simple $99 "Wildgame Innovations 4MP Micro Digital Game Scouting Camera" that I got on sale for $79.

To go along with the camera I purchased a Trophy Rock Mineral Lick. Would it be alright for me to set this up on the edge of a corn field? And do you have any suggestions on the placement of the camera (how high to set it, how far away to place the mineral block from the tree, etc)?

My stands have been hung since the first of the month and I still have some lane cutting to do; but other than that I'm just monitoring my trail cameras and getting ready for the fall planting. The heat wave we've had the last week is keeping everything down and the lack of rain is hampering the plot growth; another mosquito infested November here in Michigan again.:bang:

MNhunter... I personally don't use salt or mineral blocks. It's my opinion that if you want to set one out I'd put it in an area you know the deer frequent to see if in fact they will use it. As for your trail cam I typically set mine around 10-12 feet away from the trail or area I hope to get a picture of the deer in. I like doing that so I can get a better view of body size to get an estimation of age started on a buck before I decide to start hunting him. Don't be afraid to do a few different camera sets before the start of the season, just go ninja on em so they don't get used to you. Slip in slip out scent free as possible. Hope this helps some
