Fitness and hunting.

As I finished up my run around the neighborhood, I started to think about how my regular fitness routine will also come in handy during hunting season.

Whether it be something as simple as walking to your stand or something as strenuous as possibly having to hold your bow at full draw a little longer than you expected or even dragging a deer out to the nearest road, I think it helps in the long run to keep yourself physically fit. Not to mention having the stamina to stay in the stand longer and be more alert.

My routine is weights 3 times a week and running any where from 1.5 miles to 2.5 miles at least twice a week.

I lift three or four days a week. Right now my routines are a little short since I'm trying to get the basement finished before the new baby gets here. I never was much of a runner, but always try to take the kids to the ball field or soccer field and practice once or twice a week, so I do get some running in then.

Many a hunter has died trying to drag out their deer (shoveling the first snow of the year) after basically sitting on their butts the rest of the year. Life in general is a lot better when you are not struggling to catch your breath after walking a few steps. As you age it becomes so much more apparent how important staying in "shape" is. Resistance training and some cardio every week should be a common sense type of thing, but we all know there is not much common sense these days.
