Scbasshunter
How far will deer typically travel during the early season? I have my stand setup in an opening in the woods that deer generally travel through. It is right next to a pond and about 300-400 (guess) yards from a food plot. I figure they will probably come through to go to the pond but am curious if the food plot might play a role in this scenario.
Scbasshunter
Here is what I am talking about. The pin is about where my stand is. The dried up pond in the picture has some water in it now. The food plot is the green field at the top of the picture.
wtnhunt
Depends on a few factors, mainly being food in the early season. Always heard a core area for a mature buck around here would be about one sq. mile or 640 acres. As it gets closer to the rut they move around a little more. Rhino
Like William said it depends on several factors. It also depends on the tendencies of a particular deer. Some deer are homey's and some are roamers. Of course hunting pressure can cause them to alter their habits. Trail cams have provided some interesting information over the past 6 or 7 years. Here's some recent trail cam data we got. We have 11 trail cams running in MO and they are all set on mineral licks right now. We recently ran those cams for the 1st time after having them set out, undisturbed for ~5 weeks. We caught a number of bucks on multiple cams. Using Google Earth's ruler measuring the distance between cams catching the same buck, the closest distance was ~350 yards...the furthest was ~900 yards. One buck, that I believe is 3.5 was caught on 3 cams but the furthest distance between those cams was only ~500 yards. 2 of the 5 mature bucks (4.5 & older) were caught on multiple cams. 1 of those 2 bucks was the one caught on the 2 cams ~900 yards apart. Not sure what to make of that yet. Just so you know, I don't save pics of 2.5 yr. old or younger bucks unless they have some exceptional antler traits that I want to look out for in the future. There's usually too much change in antler growth with immature bucks for me to ID specific bucks from one year to the next. I delete pics of most 2.5 year old or younger bucks and all doe & fawn pics. If you want an example of a 2.5 yr. buck I'm talking about that I saved I'll post it but that's getting off your topic.
