Scbasshunter
The ladder stand that I put up for archery season is in a great spot. The only problem is the wind. It will most likely be blowing from me to where the deer should be moving through. The only solution that I can think of is to put a climber on a tree across from the stand so the wind will be in my face. I feel like it is too late to be moving the ladder stand. Does anybody have any other suggestions?
Scbasshunter
Stand placement. Also, would it be ok to hunt in the morning time since the thermals carry the scent up?
whitetailfreak55
I've moved stands and hunted them the same day. I moved mine in the middle of the day and hunted them the same afternoon and still saw deer
Scbasshunter
Stand placement. Good to know. I'll probably hunt it the first morning and move it when I climb down. I guess I was so excited about the spot and the season starting that I didn't stop to think about the wind and where the deer would be moving. Rhino
Like whitetailfreak55, I've set stands and hunted them the same day. I've moved stands from a tree I was hunting to another tree & right then hunted it because I was out of position to bowhunt where the deer were moving through. I do that a lot less now since I'm older but I will still on occasion set a stand in the morning & hunt it that afternoon. I certainly prefer to set stands ahead of time and let them rest for a couple of weeks or so for obvious reasons. However, I keep a couple or so hang-on stands in reserve along with climbers so I have stands to set & hunt quickly when I need to. When I set a stand to hunt it that day or within a couple of days I keep my shooting lane trimming to a minimum and attempt to do it as quietly as I can. Breezy days are nice when that's an option to help cover any noise. Edited August 8, 2013 by Rhino
dbHunterNY
you might be able to go in there mid day if it's not a bedding area and move the stand like the others have said. depends on how remote of a location it is and how much activity is around. you want to try not to walk across the trail is another thing with moving it to the other side. if you have to cross the trail do it right in front of your stand or past the your stand where you think the deer are coming from. I've seen older deer cut a hunter's, lock up, turn around, and go the other way. if you don't move it, thermals with calmness in the mornings can be tricky. a slight breeze here or there can over power a thermal and cause the wind to change direction for a moment. might let deer "bust" you even if they aren't right in front of you. just something to consider.
