HunteratHeart
This hunt started like all my other hunts. Woke up at 5 in the morning tired, but excited to get to the stand. The problem was I was taking my best friend hunting with me, but he didn't want to get up. So a cup of water later I got him up and ready to get to the hunting site. We got to the site and all felt great, perfect temperature and perfect conditions. Brought out my savage .270 for this hunt (I was feeling lucky). I put my best friend sitting on the ground about a hundred yards behind me so he could cover anything to my right that got by me and that came from behind me. Well as we all know hunting in the morning isn't easy. Still sleepy sitting in our comfy stands makes us wanna sleep. So I pulled out my phone and started playing games to get me awake, looking up occasionally to scan my field of view. Well I decided to text my friend to see if he had seen anything yet (it was about 8:00). I got no reply. But I heard something coming and it was coming fast through the woods from his direction, so I leaned out to my right and looked behind me to see 3 does shoot into the woods 20 yards to my right. I thought well darn he done spooked the deer so the hunts over. So I text the son of a gun and said "man did you spook them does" and I got a text reply saying "I fell asleep and they walked almost on top of me but when I got set up to shoot, one was behind me and spooked and they all ran". About the time I was replying I heard something coming in front of me about 5 yards away in the woods so I got my rifle ready. I could hear every leaf crumbling, every twig snapping, every beat of my heart and then I see 4 does walk out 5 yards from my stand and walk down my shooting lane around the corner and disappear. About 20 minutes later my friend message me and said "hey man lets leave we ain't going to see anything," but I knew that something was going to happen I just knew. So in the middle of replying no I look up and caught a shine out of the corner of my eye. It was like seeing that hot girl at the mall that just almost didn't get seen. My head snapped to the left and i saw him! I saw the man! 100yards away and walking right down the path those does just walked! All I could do was message my friend saying "buck I see him buck!!". I get a reply "is he a shooter?". No time to reply to message cause the buck had walked into my shooting lane 50 yards away, and he was walking right to me! I had my crosshairs on him and safety off! He would walk 5 steps and turn to go into woods and stop, but turn really quick and walk closer. I let him walk to 15 yards and I was shaking so bad I and I couldn't catch my breath. My heart was racing and my lungs were numb. He starting walking into the woods but stopped broadside just before his shoulder went into woods and I squeezed the trigger.. The bullet had left the terminal, in flight. In the time it took for that bullet to hit that buck I woulda thought I was dying. It was the longest split second of my life. He buckled down and ran into the woods and it just sounded like all **** breaking loose in the woods. I stood up and yelled for my friend with the last breath I caught before regaining my calmness. My friend being a great tracker, i put him to work. But he saw no blood. so he walked 20 yards and found a drop the size of a pen point. I started getting sick to my stomach. Man was he too close? Did I gut shot him? All this negativity going through my head and disappointment. Yet still no blood!! We about gave up when I turned to my left and raised my dropping head to see 20 yards into the woods was this beautiful 16" wide 8 pointer. I dropped to my knees and crawled to my buck so happy 5 years of passing bucks up just to make my first buck worth every season I waited for him!! dbHunterNY
it's your choice not that of your buddy's... if you keep passing young deer nobody will harass you, regardless of the head gear. you don't necessarily have to shoot a bigger buck every time. congrats on the deer you've taken so far though! you're doing well. welcome to the forums! bowhunter97
Welcome to the forums and i agree. My first buck was a 4 point. Fallowing that were two 3 points though. HunteratHeart
My first Buck (8pointer) It's just knowing where deer like to travel. I always pic a trail or opening between where they bed and where the food source I cause I know they will cross my shooting lane eventually. I've never used a call or bait. But this year I put corn out so hoping to see more bucks..
