Our 16 x 24' northern NY cabin

Well guys, here is what I have been up to this summer... my son and I decided to build a hunting cabin and we enlisted the help of a buddy who is a general contractor. He knows WAY more than I do and although I've built structures before.... it was too much to try and do in my off time and be ready for this season.... as it is, Im running shy on time... but here we go. The cabin design is one we saw and liked and the actual interior is 16x24' with a 6' porch on the front. The cabin has 10' walls with a loft in the rear. I wanted to use rough sawn material wherever wood would be seen, for the cabin-like feeling and we used conventional lumber and pressure treated everywhere else. I decided to use rough sawn cedar for the decking on the porch too....The building is built to code and I actually did get a building permit as I want the structure insured in case a have a tree land on it or a break in. Oh, and we are totally off the grid.... we will eventually have generator and solar power, but will never have running water...

The area in the gravel with the squares spray painted will be dug out and made deeper for footers.

We bought this wood stove used and I tore it down, replaced the gaskets, cleaned it and then had it inspected. It is a Vermont Castings ASPEN model, which is my daughter's name by the way... she loved that! Very nice little stove.....

That is a hellava job, looks great!!! I'm interested in seeing more pics.

My pops and I are building a new camp as we go through this season. We cannot agree on a size for the life of us. Where did you find the layout for your camp.

I found a picture of one I liked on the internet and just changed the size to fit my needs... I will post more pics as I go.. especially when I start the interior...

Very nice. Lots of good times coming in that cabin I bet.

Wondering why it is on a slab and then raised above it? I've not seen that before. You in or near flood plain?

No to flooding area... the reason it is lifted is because I wanted to build it on a floating slab due to the amount of rocks and boulders that were just too costly to remove in the ground... we put down a total of 14" of gravel (6" bank run gravel and 8" of 3/4 minus crusher run). Then poured the floating pad to minimize individual concrete pier settling or frost heaving. The reason for the space between the pad and the floor framing is for 4 reasons..

1) the 18" promotes air flow which helps to prevent musty smell in the cabin

2) less critter friendly for animals burrowing up under there and I can get to them if they do...

3) gives me storage area for small things and access should I ever add utilities...

4) local building code says that there must be a minimum of 18" between the slab and any building materials that are NOT pressure treated.... because I did not want to put down a PT subfloor, elevating the cabin just made sense
