StoneNix
I was just wondering if the deer can smell my trophy rock? I am curious of this?
HoytHunter831
Yes yes they can. Deer have a very good nose. Why do you ask?
wtnhunt
Would think they should be able to smell it.
dbHunterNY
I can smell the minerals on my hands after handling them, so I've got to think that they can smell them.
StoneNix
I was just hoping! To answer your question, I was just curious and hoping they could. I am having trouble keeping my population of deer coming to my lure, and minerals!
FireStation46
I just got rid of my water softener system that uses salt. I went to an electric osmosis system and dumped all the salt from the old system near my ladder stand. It will be interesting to see if it works. I tried the trophy rock before but I thought it was too small an amount to make the deer notice. I think you have to use a lot of minerals to get the spot worked up IMHO
dbHunterNY
once they find the trophy rock or any mineral site it will get worked up with time. quicker if your minerals are placed on the ground opposed to the rock on a stump. Strut10
I actually had ZERO success with having deer work Trophy Rocks that I put out. They plumb ignored them.
Ohiobucks
I've had numerous deer hit a trophy rock over the years, with this Ohio 10 pt being the most impressive...
whitetailfreak55
I had a big 10 point hitting one of my trophy rocks last year. It seemed to work pretty well
KSHoytHunter
Can deer smell Trophy Rock? We go thru several a year on my dad's place. The deer love them there. SW Missouri
MNhunterr
The property I hunt has an abundance of corn, beans, and acorns but I decided to try the Trophy Rock out for the heck of it. The deer havent touched it - Had it out in numerous spots for a good 2 months.
hoytshooter09
Its cool to see how some things work better in different areas we have a property we set 2 trophy rocks out and they were both gone in 2 weeks.
RangerClay
I actually had ZERO success with having deer work Trophy Rocks that I put out. They plumb ignored them. That's because your PA. antler restriction has passed on genetics without common sense. Everytime I've put them out the deer go crazy for them. dbHunterNY
That's because your PA. antler restriction has passed on genetics without common sense. Everytime I've put them out the deer go crazy for them. joe's into the wine again. causing a ruckus. they work just as good as any mineral supplement out there. put it in a good spot and leave it. let the deer find it and they'll hammer the thing long after it's gone. literally there will be a hole in the dirt at least 6" deep where it was. dogdoc
just remember that deer will hit minerals more at different times of year and also if your soil has higher mineral content then deer might not utilize your mineral stations as much. todd
Rhino
Never bothered trying trophy rock due to the expense compared to other mineral options. One thing I found strange was...last year we put out a mineral mix that the real estate agent swore by on his place about 50 Mi. west of ours. The deer never touched it. Matter of fact when we checked some of those same spots this year they still hadn't touched it. All it did was kill the vegetation it was on. Put out a different mineral mix this year in 5 old mineral licks we found last fall and made 9 new ones. They loved this mix! Go figure.
