whitetailfreak55
You will need refills and I dont use any scent. I only use mine during turkey season so idk how it'd work for deer
hoosierhunter
Theracell question I use mine during deer season with no issues
Ravin R10 man
Gonna give one a try..ordered a Thermacell, a harness, in RT of course,....and a 4 pack refill kit. I hate those little noseeum bugs that crawl in your ears and nose..and they bite too, besides the skeeters
FireStation46
Thermacell is awesome. I found that deer and bear do not react any differently if I use the original pads or the dirt scented pads in the device.
SouthGaHuntingandOutdoors
I've used the dirt scent, it's a little strong in scent. But I'd honestly rather that scent than the regular.
wtnhunt
They do work Martin, but you will be able to smell the odor given off. Sure deer smell it too, but don't think they are too alarmed by it. Far as how well they work, they do work pretty well for mosquitoes, not as well for deer flies, not sure about the noseeums. dbHunterNY
they work well. when you get the refill packs by the biggest one possible (in store: 4 butane cartridges and 12 mats) or (online: 10 butane cartridges and 30 mats). it's a better deal the more you buy and you will use them. butane screws into the bottom and the mats slide in between a grill and hot plate within the unit. that's it. works on everything we've got here... flies will swarm a little but won't get too close for long. Rish
Good to know they work to some extent... was kinda hoping it'd get rid of deer flies - those things are true bastards
WStreblo
Theracell question I have used one for years. While stationed down south I've used it while hunting in Texas Louisiana and Mississippi. Works great here in Ohio and I've used it up in Canada where the black flies and mosquitos are brutal. Don't wait til they are bombarding you to fire it up because it takes some time to get goin.
wtnhunt
Get the value packs here Martin. Wally world does not carry them so I have to order them from cabelas. Cabelas sells just the butane cartridges in 2 packs too, which I have bought on multiple occasions. We had issues with our first thermacell, the o ring leaked and the butane cartridge would run out early. I got where I would take it out when I was done hunting as well as turning off with the switch. Also if you use the holster make sure the orientation of the theramcell is facing up. It will not work right if it is sideways as the heat will escape the side and it will not properly heat the pad. Pads can be used for more than one hunt if you have a short weekday(1.5 hour) hunt like I tend to get during the early season, but they are not as effective. Deer flies are at their worst here when walking. Unfortunately I have yet to figure out how to keep the thermacell where it is effective when I am walking to my stands. The deer flies are not as bad once in a stand. This has been a pretty bad year for the flies here.
Ravin R10 man
Thanks for the advice guys..hope it works better than the head net
FireStation46
Absolutely, much better not to have your view blocked by the head net. I hunt Alabama, Georgia, Pa, NY and NJ; turkey and deer season. Whatever bugs are out have never bugged me with my Thermacell. Nice for fishing lakes and s treasures too. And no chemicals sprayed on your skin or duds. Can't get better than that!
Ravin R10 man
Good to know they work to some extent... was kinda hoping it'd get rid of deer flies - those things are true bastards not to mention the green headed horse flies...I think one found oil when it bit me today.... FireStation46
We have big biting flies here too, however, they never seemed to show up when I used Thermacell.
Ravin R10 man
got it all set up and ready to try out
birdhunter39
I bought one a few years a go and i gave it away . the skeeters tore me up until i sprayed myself with Off bug spray . i let the thermocell run for a hour and the skeeters kept coming . I personally will never buy one or give one as a gift . i felt bad giving it to a friend .
swhughes81
Theracell question Best defense against deer flies are dryer sheets rub them on u can even keep them tucked in ur collar seems to work real well now if ur hunting don't use em cause of the scent but checking cameras or whatever else it works good I've never tried to use the scent free dryer sheets but they might work too
Rhino
I use mine during deer season with no issuesSame here. Don't wait til they are bombarding you to fire it up because it takes some time to get goin.Yep...learned that the hard way. I turn mine on right before I start walking to my stand and clip in on a belt loop or my pack.
The Bug House
I'm pretty skeptical about these sort of products, but my Thermacell works great. I've only used it 4 or 5 times this summer, once camping during a hot humid spell, combined with some Deep Woods Off, I didn't get bit once .... and the choppers were thick! FireStation46
I don't know what folks are doing where they do not get good results. I always use mine.
Ravin R10 man
It worked GREAT!!!...had skeeters buzzing all around the "zone"....until I got down to track...SO, I turned it back on, as I had it clipped to my pack. Proceeded to drag my deer out and stop to rest without swating bugs
bowhunter97
I absolutley believe in em. They work great for skeeters and as far as the deer i have had 2 small bucks and 2 does walk right under me while i've had it on. One if the does i ended up shooting by my house. I could have easily killed the rest but on the wma i saw them on they werent legal. I've seen a ton of deer on that wma with the thermacell on but they werent legal nor were they right under me. I just figured i'd just say the ones i could have jumped on lol
