Scbasshunter
I know that when it rains it washes your scent away or at least minimizes it. What do y'all think it does while hunting? Y'all think it may help mask your scent some or make no difference?
hoosierhunter
Scent in rain. Rain creates ozone which eliminates scent. A light rain is fine to hunt in, but downpours are a waste of time. The best time to hunt is immediately when the rain lets up.
hoytshooter09
If its a real light rain I think it helps the deer smell but if its a steady rain I think it does help minimize it as long as the wind isn't blowing straight to the deer. But my friend has rabbit dogs and they prefer rain or lots of moisture they say there dogs can pick up there tracks better.

WStreblo
Scent in rain. I took off the week of Halloween last year to bow hunt... It was durin that hurricane that blasted Jersey and New York. I had rain so hard and trees swayin like crazy. I seen more bucks that week than I ever had in my life. Our rut ha just started up when the weather rolled in. Granted the deer never went to fields or wide open timber but I found them in thick cover and down in the hollows. They responded well to rattling, bleats, and grunts. I didn't do any calling in the heavy wind but when it would die down you bet your bow I was makin a ton of ruckus in them trees and within 45 min I had 8 bucks come flying in looking. When the rut is going nothin stops them except an Easton to the lungs... Go find them and hunt them. They can't go without eating even if they don't move far to do it... Hunt em thick and hunt em low and I bet you put more deer in the truck. Just my 2 cents on this topic.
wtnhunt
Never had much luck in heavy downpours here. Have seen a good bit of deer movement in light misting rain or just after the heavy rain ends. Been plenty of times we have watched the weather to see when there would be breaks in the rain and made plans accordingly. Best buck I have ever taken was on a foggy misty morning. Far as scent goes, not really sure if the moisture pushes scent down. Would seem that it would make your scent easier for deer to pick up, I mean they lick their noses to get them moist when they scent check, gotta be a reason behind that, right? Maybe someone with a biology background could shed more light?
hoosierhunter
Scent in rain. I know the drier the conditions the harder is it for deer to smell you. I'm just not sure about the exact science other than moisture on their nose helps them pick up scent better.
Dawg
I ain't got a clue but this thread reminded me of a time (about 20 years ago) my father, mother and I were out on a boat ride down the Neches River. A storm brewed up and lightening went to popping......and here we were in an aluminum boat, in the water, creeping up the river at about 3-4 knots because the rain was so heavy. So boat rides are another thing that aren't good during down pours.
smha6784
Scent in rain. Seems like I always see the critters stirring about after a rain morning or evening. My pops shot the biggest deer to date off our lease in a heavy down pour with a muzzle loader. Hunting out of a tripod with I big ridiculous clear plastic bag over him while smoking a cigarette. Boy I tell ya my pops always pulls one out. I remember plenty of times. When I was pup just starting to hunt I'd have to hold his smoke so he could shoot a deer. Stinger-Hunter
One of the best deer/strategy books I ever read on hunting had a story about scent and rain. The author told a story about how he was hunting with a buddy and it started to rain. He watched 2 does pass him downwind - they didn't see him and he didn't see them. They bolted from his scent and it was raining pretty hard, he explained. He was convinced that day that rain has little effect on scent elimination. But who knows. play the wind. FireStation46
It will mask you scent if you took proper precautions. However, if you don't bath, smoke, hang around fuel pumps etc. all that can work against you.
