That's it I'm jumping into this one... When historians look back on these times they won't say our economy failed because the browns lost to the steelers, they won't blame the 49ers for high gas prices, they won't blame the dolphins for wars fought on a taxpayer credit card. They will blame money and power hungry legislators. Seriously sports as a downfall???? C'mon... That's the absolute worst proposed cause I've personally ever heard of. Who cares where smha6784 posts a football thread. Free damn country and free damn forum. I don't see one complaint above from any other contributor or from any administrator other than you.

Perhaps you missed the part in my original post about people not knowing their politicians but knowing their teams.

The country is entirely disengaged form the important things and squander their time and energy on sports.

A fellow has time to watch the games but not attend a PTA meeting. Or time to watch a game and not go to a rally. Or he gets the newspaper but doesn't read the headlines - just the sports. Or calls his favorite sports radio but never calls into talk radio because he doesn't listen to it.

Has time to watch a game but not play one with his kid.

You want more examples?

Many problems we face could be solved if the population was paying attention and engaged.

Go back and read about the Grainger laws and how the little people got things changed because they were engaged.

But we're not. We're watching our games.

Did you write to your Reps and give them your opinion on Syria? Probably not but you had time to write here to defend your games.

I did write to both of my senators and my rep about Syria. And I email them regularly too. So that I get a notice of when they are holding a town hall meeting. And I go.

I know I am in the minority here, that I'm a lone voice crying from the wilderness.

You are correct that sports had nothing to do with gas prices, high taxes, wars, political correctness, and other modern ills. What has allowed those things to happen to us is our lack of attention to those important issues. Because we are too buisy watching sports.

I am more active in politics than you would ever know, or ever could be. You don't know me I don't know you go start a thread crying about this in the political area. Knuckle head.

I made my point and I did it without calling you names or belittling you.

What was the point, irritate those of us talking about foot ball ?

My points were that there are too much sports in America and that sports fans seem to think that any and every venue is appropriate for discussing them.

As for irritating you it was not my intent to do so but if I did it fortifies another theory of mine that many sports fans can not have a rational discussion about serious topics without getting irritated and calling people names.

foot ball time !!!!

I write my senators, I write my reps... I served in Iraq, I still have friends serving so this situation with Syria has my attention. I've attended campaign rallies, I've campaigned for politicians and I take the time to educate myself on laws passed and laws challenged. I read the entire law and not just the first line of it. I read the newspaper in its entirety to include the sports and I even do the crossword. But do I love sports.... **** yeah and there ain't a damn thing wrong with it. I got a TiVo and I can always watch a game even if its the next day so if there is something more important to do that day with the family it gets done. Your acting like every person who watches sports and talks about it more than what congress does is nothing but a uninformed neglectful bigot. Maybe your friends are that way and it torments you... But don't you even think about lumping me into a group of people you despise without knowing me.

Yea ... He hates TV as well. IIRC, he's made a post blaming the downfall of society on TV in the past. I understand his point, there are a lot of couch potatoes around, but everyone is not the same. These days with DVR + Netflix/HULU you can watch more than ever with less screen time than ever.

Ultra, do you feel the same about competitive shooting and tractor pulls?

Not at all. It's modern pro sports that I think are eating up the minds of Americans.

And btw, I include most college stuff as pro.

Tractor pulls, shooting sports and the like make up maybe 1/10 of one % of our sports.

I also don't put down people who Play sports - hunting, skiing, golf, softball leagues, bowling, etc.

Getting out there and competing or just getting out there is good.

It's those arm chair quarterbacks who live and die by their teams, who fill their heads with useless facts, meaningless statistics and trivia about the players and who can not have a rational conversation without getting Loud or sarcastic and who don't pay much attention to the world their marriages and there families because of their games that I think are a big problem in this country.

There are Waaay to many of them IMO.
