RangerClay
A kid I watched grow up in my hometown church was hanging a treestand last weekend by himself. He fell and broke three ribs and several vertebrae. And to make it worse, he didn't tell anyone where he was in the woods. Took the Search & Rescue hours to find him after dark. Needless to say, there will be no deer season for him. So lucky to be alive. ALWAYS tell someone where you will be! ALWAYS get help hanging a stand! ALWAYS strap in on the way up and on the way down!
PotashRLS
Good post buddy! Hope the young guy recovers well. Basic info from Hunter Education. Always use a harness or linemans belt when doing treestands. Also "Plan your hunt and hunt your plan" which includes telling someone where you are going and when you plan on returning. Being secretive or complacent could kill you. Why take a chance??
wtnhunt
Good reminder Joe. Sometimes you don't have options to have anyone go with you to hang a stand and in those situations absolutely need to be sure someone knows where you will be and also need to take caution and use safe practice. Hope the young man heals up ok.
redkneck
Good post Joe, I hope the kid has a nice recovery. I know for me personally gravity is more and more fond of me every year and I use a lot more precautions than I used to.
Rhino
Yea...he's lucky to be alive. Hope he has a full and complete recovery. Can't say I always can have help hanging a stand. Extremely rare not to so almost always though. I ALWAYS tell somewhere where I'm going to be hanging a stand and when to expect me back on the rare occasions when I don't have help. Also...I ALWAYS use a climbing belt when hanging a stand going up and down the tree unless it's a ladder stand. I NEVER set a ladder stand without help though. All mine are too heavy to raise for this old fart.
sskybnd
great post, so many hunters dont know how so very importantant it is to make sure your safe going up and coming down and when your in the stand, some of us are so lucky to be alive after falling from a stand, i can have imbathey with that hunter, i too fell from a stand at 20 ft breaking my wrist in 2 places and 3 ribs. that ended my season for the year also. being we are some of the fortunet ones that can tell about it, we should be the watch dogs on informing hunters on the importance of saftey. WStreblo
Just a reminder to everyone!! I was hunting out of one of my hang on stands a few years back and I took a rumble out of it. Platform had a thick coating of ice on it and before I could get strapped in down I went. I was lucky I didn't break anything but did end up with a concussion. Now I GPS all my hang on stands and assign them a letter. When I leave to hunt I let the girlfriend know which stand I'm hunting and if there is a change in plans that way IF something does happen she has the coordinates to give emergency crews. Technology is there... Use it.
Stinger-Hunter
I do that all the time. Good reminder! Thanks.
