redkneck
I can't remember squat on obd1! Google and forums are your friend
Husabud
Speed sensor could be on a wheel. If its bad it will tell comp wrong speed and hence wrong fuel which could signal injector
birdhunter39
Red that's where i found the first two ( 2) answers , the CODE 54 still puzzles me ,there were two ( 2 ) different answers for that one . now for CODE 24 , Husabud , The trans is a 700R4 . but the trans went out and a buddy and his friend went to the auto yard and found one and the only thing that was different was the one ( 1 ) plug in's was different and that controls my speed odm. and millage indicator . then i called my brother and he said CODE 22 might be making CODE 54 show up . Husabud
Scan your truck and pull in his truck. Lol. Seriously though, computers really mess up the works sometimes. Good Luck!
birdhunter39
the sad thing is no codes are coming up , the car runs very smooth , smooth idle , has great pick up , at 9:00 am i'm going to call the emission mechanic and listen to what he says , since i've moved to Indiana , I've dropped 5 auto shops because i didn't trust them , they would fix one thing and a week later something else would go bad and it wouldn't have nothing to do with on what was just fixed . so if this guy gives me a song and dance i'll just hang up the phone on him . LETMGROW
You need to get this vehicle to a technician who will ignore codes and read the data. Some sensors can be slightly out of range but not enough to go beyond the threshold to set a code and bring the MIL light on. O2 sensors are notorious for this. Sometimes slow switching or high or low readings which will drive fuel delivery rich. Even a faulty injector or bad pressure regulator can drive fuel trims crazy. These fuel trims have to be monitored on a computer and can be graphed with the right equipment. A small vacuum leak in the induction system will cause added fuel to the engine as the computer is trying to compensate for the added air not going through the mass airflow sensor or even a small exhaust leak upstream of the front ( pre-cat ) o2 sensor. I have seen vehicles which have had o2 sensor after o2 sensor replaced because a code reader said the sensor was out of range when the sensor was simply doing its job and something else was giving false mixture readings to the sensor. You need to go beyond some shops which will just scan a code and hang new parts on your car and take your money. Many parts stores will do a scan for free. Why? They want to sell you a part. Quite often an unqualified counter person will run out, plug in a code reader and tell you you need a certain part. You buy the part, go home and install it and the problem persists. Of course you think the part was defective when in reality the diagnosis was the culprit. There are a lot of shade tree or backyard shops out there. Shop around and find a shop which isn't necessarily the cheapest but has a reputation of honesty and integrity. Good Luck, Lynn
LETMGROW
Scan your truck and pull in his truck. Lol. Seriously though, computers really mess up the works sometimes. Good Luck! This is not really a LOL matter. Some shops have tried this only to discover the Inspection computer records the scanned vehicle and the emission tested vehicle's VIN numbers. The info on each inspection is forwarded to the main computer in the states DMV and if the numbers do not match the inspection is red flagged and investigated. Scanning one vehicle and testing another is called "Clean Scanning". There are hefty fines for anyone violating the rules as well as lost of their inspection license. We had a dealership doing this when the emission systems testing first started a few years ago. They were bringing used vehicles in and testing known good vehicles to get a vehicle through an inspection. They were caught and paid an enormous fine. We as test stations aren't supposed to be doing favors. We are expected to live up to our agreement and do the job properly. If someone doesn't want me to do a job it isn't my problem when his or her vehicle won't pass a test. I am in business to repair vehicles not take a pay off and send you on your way. If you don't like the way I do things go somewhere else. Lynn
birdhunter39
i failed emissions once again yesterday , this is test number 4 , the hydrocarbon should be at 80.00 mine was at 87.00 , so yesterday evening the only things left to replace were the o2 sensor , i had a tune up done ( the last one was a year and a half a go ) .i replaced the cap , rotor , plugs and wires , the old cap was worn out as well as the rotor , so hopefully after spending $700.00 just on my emissions i will pass . if not i'm leaving the car there and walking away , because i'm not spending a penny more on the car's emission . Husabud
It is quite clear to me that Clean Scanning is illegal. If it puts a vehicle back on the street after several hundred dollars have been spent on a '93 Caprice I say do it. I don't suggest it be done on a daily basis to get cars to sell easier or trick a buyer. I am not a fan of all the shiit boxes on the road either. birdhunter39
this emission testing i believe is a scam myself , because if i take it to one of their certified shops , i'll easly spend $300.00 on up . one of my old cars would not pass the states emission test and just for them to pour a chemical into the gas tank to clean the hydrocarbons would cost me $500.00 and i said no no no , i ended up selling the car for something different . just last year a buddy of mine took his car to the same place and for the turn of a screw or two it cost him $300.00 for 2 min. of work . not sure on how many counties in Indiana do the emission testing . my 1993 caprice has only120,000 miles on it , when i bought the car it had 90,00 orgional miles on it , garage kept until i bought it , non-smokers owned the car .
