Born4it
Looking at a new slug gun, and have a couple buddies who really like their H&Rs. A couple questions... Would you recommend the 12 or 20 ga, and why? Which has a softer recoil? Accuracy comparison? What slugs do you recommend? Scope? Was thinking about the Nikon Prostaff Shotgun scope with BDC reticle. Finally, are there any big differences in the feel or performance of the different models? They all seem pretty similar, but I'm kind of leaning toward the Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe in a 20 ga. Thanks, and God bless! Ryan Edited September 18, 2013 by Born4it
MUDRUNNER
I'm interested in this myself. I was thinking about getting a 20 gauge Slug Hunter for the kids next year. I was wandering how the recoil is on the 20 also.
whitetailfreak55
20 gauge has less recoil and can shoot a little further then the 12's. I would recommend the savage bolt action 20 gauge. It has a three shot clip thats nice to have. Good luck
RangerClay
We were once required to use slug guns only. If it were to change back again, I would have a Remington 1100 and I would definately use these slugs. Check out the balistics...amazing! dbHunterNY
if I ever did need to go shotgun i'd get a barrel for my TC Encore Prohunter and port it. otherwise just use it in muzzleloader form it is now.
Born4it
Ya I have a TC Encore and have thought about getting the slug barrel, but to get the barrel, scope, and have the scope mounted would cost more than just getting the H&R new. Always food for thought. I was taking a look at the Savage 220 as well. Thanks for that suggestion! Zizzer59
I know the 20-gauge would have less of a kick to it. I've never used a slug gun before but they look sweet. I remember killing my first deer with a smooth barrel .410 and a slug. Took me three shots lol. Couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with it. WStreblo
Deer Gun Since Ohio is shotgun and muzzleloader only I use a remington 870 12ga with a slug barrel and a scope. It's a lethal gun out to 150 with good ammo.
njbowhntr
Personally I would get a TC Pro Hunter in 20ga. I prefer the lighter felt recoil of the 20ga, which helps with the flinching. The reason for the TC Pro Hunter, which I do own one, is the versatility of it. You can just buy barrels for it and switch them out.
jbeck
I purchased a mossburg slug gun years ago when I was hunting a slug only area. It is a bolt, and ported. This thing shoots 3 inch groups at 100 yards with federal premium 2 3/4" Barnes X bullets. Don't use it much but what a shooter

Don't use it much but what a shooter I got a Mossberg 535 12ga with a tactical stock that I use for turkey hunting... Shooting 3.5 in shells out of it and I tell you I'd rather have Chuck Norris roundhouse me in my face than shoot it for the heck of it. Thing will kick you thru a tree. fly
Deer Gun Savage 20 gauge with rifled barrel - bolt action! Reasonable price and about as accurate as you'll get. Using a 12 gauge guns are bigger, heavier, and kick more. A 20 gauge bolt action is the perfect slug gun in my opinion. Until I can justify buying another gun, I just use my ML during the shotgun season.
