Zizzer59
Has anyone else seen how much more popular crossbows are getting? I know not that many people in MO own one but I have my dads old one from when we lived in AR. I see a commercial every 5 minutes on Outdoors Channel and every other hunting channel on TV. Also, these things are getting tiny! These things are only like a foot wide! Mine is more like three feet and has iron sights. I let my great-uncle borrow it last year and he called me a week later and said nevermind he would just go buy a new one lol
wtnhunt
They do seem to be becoming more and more popular, especially with states making them allowed for regular archery gear.
kudu88
Crossbow Popularity I think that the increasing popularity of it is due to a couple of factors. 1) the walking dead. A character on that show shoots one and of course people think that it's cool so companies are eager to cash in on it. Hence the zombie killer arrows and bolts. 2) lots of states are implementing crossbow seasons. In Illinois they put a crossbow season starting the second Tuesday after shotgun season I think. So there is a dedicated bow season in the fall then a crossbow/bow season in the winter. 3) ease of use. The fact of the matter is that most casual hunters are lazy! And a crossbow is a lazy bow hunters tool IMHO. Now if you are unable to draw a standard bow I get it but the majority cross bow hunters are casual hunters. Sure there will be the hardcore guys that use them. But the simple fact is that it is hard to lean to shoot a bow and people like instant gratification. If you can shoot a rifle then you can shoot a crossbow. The same can't be said for a standard bow. I know it sounds like I'm bashing the crossbow but it does have its place. I want to get one to use in Wisconsin during gun season. Most of my shots there are under 50 yards anyway and I love bowhunting. I just wish that states would give it it's own dedicated season and not crowd the deer woods with lazy casual crossbow hunters during bow season. chrisb
Actually, I think it will get hotter and hotter, thanks to the popular TV series and so called Apocalypse. Some people know nothing about crossbow. Beside, no just fans, but some preppers are going to buy one. With that being said, as far as I know, big companies of industry are still trying to lobby many states to allow people own such a weapon. So, yes, it's a trend right now, and trend very well. dbHunterNY
more popular in states that allow them. here in NY we're still a bit behind. not allowed at all here.
Trevor
Here in Ontario they are very popular. My sister on law loves to hunt during archery season but isn't strong enough to draw a bow so the crossbow is good for her.
dogdoc
I fell for the crossbow and purchased an Excalibur last year. I love shooting this thing and it gives my daughter (who can't draw back a legal bow yet) to go hunting. Have yet to shoot a deer with one but hopefully that will change this year. Still love shooting my bow. When i'm in a tree stand i carry the bow and when i am hunting one of my pop up blind i will be carrying the crossbow. The goal is to get more people hunting during bow season and i think the legalization of crossbows here in oklahoma will do just that. todd
ruttinbuc
They have their place. Illinois has the right idea with them with the separate season. Mentioned are the popular series where cross bows are used. I take notice that there are a lot more women shooting a compound or even traditional bows than crossbows. Maybe the movie Brave has something to do with that.
jbeck
Here in pa they are legal for archery equipment. They have definatly put more hunters in the woods. On one note I don't like the crowds it brings to archery. On the other hand I like how it has allowed folks who can't hunt with traditinal archery equip. The possibility to hunt the rut. I have an Excalibur. And did take an 8 pt with it. It is fun but I shoot more accurate with my compound free hand so I use it.
fly
Crossbow Popularity I agree with dog doc, if we can get more women kids involved In hunting it will be better for our sport. Sure there will be more people in the woods - but as the demand increases I believe more public area will be made available including improved access. In addition as more people hunt - pro-hunting legislators will be elected to office.
Zizzer59
That's a good point about the pro-hunting legislature, and I don't mind hunting with a crossbow, but I like what MO is doing with adding the Alternative Weapon season. We are allowed to use a muzzleloader, pistol, air rifle, crossbow, bow, or atlatl. Especially since my muzzleloader broke a couple of years ago! jesse8953
My crossbow has put a lot of meat on my family's table. I'm glad Ohio includes them in archery season. I'd rather kill my dinner than buy it at a store!
HunteratHeart
Crossbow Popularity I own the 2013 Parker tornado f4 crossbow and love it but its too dang easy. I wish I would have bought a Hoyt or Mathews bow instead because I love the challenge of almost having a fair chance of killing deer in the woods. Plus shooting a bow just feels better and the reward farms bigger knowing you made a good shot. Not the crossbow.
Cowboy Wayne
Crossbow Popularity Here in NJ crossbows used to be legal only for people with physical disabilities that couldn't draw a legal bow. This year they lifted the stipulation and legalized crossbows across the board. Talk about a spike in popularity lol. Everybody is buying them here just because you can now. It's definitely crowding up the woods and I agree with what a lot of you said about it allowing for laziness, but on the other hand it got my little sister hunting bow season who can't draw a legal bow for sheer lack of upper body strength. It has its ups and downs but overall I like them.
drkillemquick
Here in Ontario they are very popular and have been for a long time. Love my crossbow, found I was not bow hunting as much anymore due to the fact that with a young family I was being pulled in to many directions and just didn't have the time to shoot my bow like i used to. FireStation46
It us increasing. It is not lazy as stated above. You still have to know where and how to hunt, scent control, being accurate. Actual lay, it may be easier with a compound bow as you can get off a second shot a lot quicker than with a crosses bow . As long as it is legal so be it. Let's not be divisive witching the hunting community. We all need each other's support as the anti's wil look to divide and conquer if we are not firm and unified.
