MNhunterr
The early season is coming to an end and the rut is right around the corner. What are your preferred grunts, calls, etc? I have numerous shooter bucks hitting scrapes and making rubs on my small 40 acre property. Once the corn is chopped and beans are cut and the rut kicks in do you like to use certain calls? I've never tried calling for deer before. I set up a mock scrape for the first time using code blue grave digger scrape mate and have 3-4 bucks hitting it so far after 2 weeks. What are your thoughts/opinions on the different types of calls during the rut.
WStreblo
Grunts, calls, etc I like to rattle and grunt heavily, throw a few bleats out there at times as well
wtnhunt
I grunt more often during the pre rut and into the rut. I will call blind from some of my stands. Use different sequences depending on what is going on. Usually use 3-4 short grunts per sequence but will also throw out some tending grunt sequences when I think deer are chasing. dbHunterNY
depends on what's going on in the woods. if two doe walked by I throw 2 or three bleats. I've used tending grunts too. I've had the best luck with short but sweet contact grunts. only blow a couple times into the tube. second best that's worked for me is an estrous bleat, followed by tending grunts. MNhunterr
What grunt do you guys use? I'm sure every one of them is pretty much the same... I'm not looking to do any sort of buck snort wheeze... Just a simple grunt call.
WStreblo
Grunts, calls, etc Snort wheeze can be a great call to use for a big buck that hangs up. I have a couple different grunt tubes but my favorite is my old flextone
hoytshooter09
I use an old grunt tube just what ever one sounds the best and I love to rattle and through some bleats out I had a big 9 point Chardin does and snort wheezed at him he turned worked a scrape and came right to me but it has a lot to do with the time of year around my area on how good these things work
MUDRUNNER
My most successful calling tactic by far is a long bleat followed by a few grunts. I use a can call for bleats, but blow into it instead of turning it over. My favorite grunt tube in a good old True Talker. I also have a Primos Buck Roar for growls and snort wheezes. Rhino
I'm sure everybody has their favorite grunt call they'll swear by. I prefer the MAD growl call for both grunting and growling. Growling is nothing more than a drawn out grunt. I prefer a deeper toned grunt call with a guttural type sound. Mature bucks have a deeper guttural sound to their grunting than younger bucks. As for a wheeze, I agree with WStreblo. Also I'll do some rattling every now & then too. I usually use a rattling bag since it's easier to carry than horns. The one I use is a Primos bag with larger sticks in it that produces a deeper tone than most rattling bags. Although I still carry a bleat call with me, I don't use it much anymore. I used to get good results using them. Since a lot of hunters started using them a lot, thanks to Primos, even before does are approaching estrus, favorable responses became few and far between. abrown
I like a flextone grunt tube also. I usually use doe grunts during early season, that's how I shot my doe this year, and I've shot several doe using one. The Primos hands free call is the one I've had the most luck with doe grunts. Pre-rut is going to be by far the best time to call, since the does have not quite went into heat, and the bucks are getting VERY territoral. I've grunted at bucks with does, they just look around and stick with the lady, can't say I don't blame em!
Rhino
I've grunted at bucks with does, they just look around and stick with the lady, can't say I don't blame em! Yep...they've already found what they're looking for. Not much you can do in that situation except maybe wheeze. Very low percentage situation for coaxing one like that into range though. I've thrown out a fawn bawl and had her running in and him follow. thing is she and him in tow came in so hot I never got a shot. ran right by and didn't have a clear shot where they ended up. wtnhunt
Have called in does that had bucks in tow numerous times. Timing plays a huge part. My favorite grunt tube I have had for close to 20 years, not sure what company made it. Can be a lot of fun playing around with calls and watching how the deer react. whitetailfreak55
I have a flextone also. Its got the grunt on top and the wheeze underneath. Very nice call. I've called bucks in with the grunt but no luck with the wheeze. You never know though, the whitetail woods is a crazy place. Anything can work at anytime
MNhunterr
I went with the Knight and Hale EZ Grunter Extreme. Cheap, Simple, and gets the job done.
