swhughes81
Hey I was just wondering. I have been hunting the same piece if property for 3 years now. This is my 3rd year. It's only 19.5 acres it's all woods except for a 4 acre field that's just grass with a barn next to it. My question is this. How many stands are to many on a piece of property like this? The 1st year was awesome seen several bucks and does last year only seen one buck but we also got hit with ehd pretty bad so I blamed it on that. Now so far this year i have gone every weekend and have seen only 2 does. Between the two trail cameras there are a couple bucks one is a real nice 8 pt but it's been a month since he was there and it was 2 am I am a freak about scent control spray down shower wash clothes rubber boots and this summer when I would go check cameras I only went once every 5 weeks and wore gloves Boots etc. I have 4 stands out there I am thinking of removing all just hunting the one that's been there since my bro n law bought it its in like a creek bottom where three ridges run to it and connect. I was halfway thinking of leaving it to for the year and hunting my in laws woods just down the road they have 23 acres all woods with soy bean and corn fields on three sides major highway in the front. They just bought it in aug so not much pressure there I was just gonna put one stand in it. Thanks guys sorry so long
Ravin R10 man
OOH OOOH!!!..I Know ..I know!! MidwayUSA Commercial - How Many Treestands Does One Man Need? - YouTube sometimes you need two stands to cover a good spot, for different winds..then it also depends what fields the deer are hittimg, travel routes etc. Edited October 23, 2013 by Mathews XT Man
MNhunterr
I feel that it just depends on the property... Depends where you have those 4 stands. I could only justify have 4-6 stands MAX on my 40 acres.
swhughes81
how many stands are too many Thanks I have 3 in the woods and one at the field edge. I was thinking of leaving one in the field edge and just one in the woods in the creek bottom. Leave the rest of the property alone.
MNhunterr
Do you have a picture of the property by chance? Maybe we could assist with where to place stands, etc. Just depends where trails are and everything. Im sure if you're not intruding the property all that much it wouldn't be a problem. I have as many stands that the wind allows me to hunt.
wtnhunt
Depends alot on different factors. Shape of the property is a big factor. I have 7 up on 60 acres right now and that really is not enough, front part of our property in pasture we don't even hunt. Have one more ladder up on my neighbor's property. Cannot really have too many stands imo.
swhughes81
how many stands are too many I'd say it's harder to keep deer especially bucks mature ones on small properties. I mean they show up its Just on camera in the middle of the night
hoosierhunter
how many stands are too many 19 acres is nearly impossible to manage. If you have the thick cover and water you can get deer to bed there. If it were me I would only hunt the edge of the woods and stay out of the middle. swhughes81
how many stands are too many Thanks that's what I was thinking too just stay on the edge
Rhino
Having too many stands is never my concern. Not enough is! Having stands set in good positions where deer are apt to pass within range and where I can get to them with the least amount of disturbance is certainly a huge concern. With only 19.5 acres to hunt there, it's a great idea to hunt the other 23 ac. tract too. That way you can split your hunting pressure between both tracts. fly
Stand number isn't so much of an issue - disturbing and leaving scent throughout an area is an issue. You have to mix it up - keep your scent away from the middle of the ground and designate a sanctuary in the thickest area on the land you never enter - even if it is only 5 acres. dbHunterNY
depends you should have every stand accessed without bumping deer period. also the wind shouldn't blow your scent across your property either. hunt the fringes of the property too like what's been said. you could have that many stands and still be ok. 6 is the most i'd ever think you'd be able to have. you'd only be able to hunt say two at most on any given day though. dbHunterNY
my land behind my house is 10 acres but I've only been able to get 2-3 stands in there and mostly hunt from one end with the wind that's always blowing through there. OKstate
I agree with what most have said.... I would focus more on pressure than number of stands. If you can hang several and have access without alerting the deer, I would say go for it. If you are spooking the deer when you enter or leave, I would consider not using or removing those stands, especially on smaller tracts of land. swhughes81
how many stands are too many Thanks guys I think I will keep two stands out there one in on the fringe and the other is right off a quad trail but it stays up year round. On the 23 acres I have one stand right now about 40 yards off a cut bean field I'm in the south east corner on top of a ridge. There are old and a couple new rubs around me. Directly in front of me is about 3 acres of woods a creek and then a cut corn field. I am surrounded by hickory and oak trees deer trails it looks like a good spot about 20 yards before u Go out into the corn is a rub line I counted 15 rubs 2 are new I have opted for now to stay on this ridge with the rubs and between the two fields to my north the woods get thicker and thicker and I know bucks hide in there prolly bed so I've opted to stay out hoping they might Come feed or rub and check does where I am at I really appreciate the info I got a trail camera out too about 22 yards from my stand and a mock scrape. I hunted this weekend and did not see any deer but Sunday night right at dark they did come in but it was too dark to shoot and I just Had to wait till they left. With so much sign around I'm sure ill start having better luck
