Gatorboy
Have a question that gets many different responses . My question is what's everyone's theory on once a SPIKE always a spike or is that just not the case. ? I would appreciate any input. Thanks and God Bless
whitetailfreak55
Check out qdma's website about it. There's an awesome article on it. I don't think they're always a spike
wtnhunt
Flawed theory. Most spikes are 1.5 year old and younger. Been some real good studies on this topic. James kroll followed a spike that grew to a trophy class deer, was a good episode on NAW years ago.
Maine Hntr
Actually never heard of this before, that being said i did just check out the QDMA article mentioned above and it is a good read. I agree with what's said above, i've been watching a spike this year that probably measures 7-8" long and they have a slight twist to them, could be a stud some day but you don't know unless you let them get there! 3whunt
We don't shoot spikes unless they are 2.5 years or older. About 1 in 10 meet that criteria on game cams. Haven't actually taken one the past 5 years.

redkneck
No... Heck no. True Dat, I don't know what Einstein came up with that theory.
RangerClay
I cannot find it but Charles Alsheimer does an awesome video on just that subject. He chronicles on video and still camera a young 1.5 y.o. spike as he grows to a 5.5 y.o. monster.
PotashRLS
As stated above.......total myth. I attribute it to a combination of a lack of knowledge of deer biology and an excuse for shooting a spike. Spikes generally occur in areas of high deer densities (born late due to mom being breed late) and poorer nutrition.

Zizzer59
Another nope here. I just shake my head every time I hear this. I guess when this theory came up, no one really aged the deer, or it started somewhere in deer camp when someone shot a spike and his buddies gave him crap for it so he said it. Then his buddies, being drunk of course, were like, you know what? That makes alot of sense, I think. Then they shot a spike and told their other buddies and so on.
