redkneck
Well I aint saying this is idiot proof but what I use most often is something about like this: Amazon.com: Lansky 4-rod Turn Box Crock Stick Sharpener (LCD5D): Home & Kitchen Got one at the camp somebody bought at a Chinese tool sale for about $2 lol. Works great. The key is to never let a knife get dull. Try sharpening a dull knife with this and you'll be there forever. I'll hit the stone about 2-3 times when I skin and de-bone a deer. Just my 2 cents.
PotashRLS
I have personally used the one in this link. It worked awesome and made sharpening quick and easy. I sharpened everything from fillet knives to buck knives. Great tool. Work Sharp Electric Knife and Tool Sharpener : Cabela's
wtnhunt
Use my chef's choice, not the exact same model I have but similar to this one Cabelas Chef'sChoice® Sportsman Hunting Electric Knife Sharpener : Cabela's. It does a good job and is not difficult to use, AJ gave the suggestion on it a looooong time ago. The gerber you borrowed was sharpened on the chef's choice. Prefer my lansky sharpener, but don't always have the time to use it and it is not really "idiot proof". lol.
dbHunterNY
2-Step Knife Sharpener | Smith's - Knife Sharpening Equipment, Electric Knife Sharpeners, Sharpening Stones - Since 1886 absolutely idiot proof. I use a little soapy water on the blade while using it. I've got knives plenty sharp enough... if I can shave hair with it, then it's sharp enough. heck I've even re-done machete blades that were beat to heck. any flat sharpening surface or electric sharpener is not idiot proof. ...forgot to mention it'll fit in any of your pockets along with other junk too. so you can bring it with you into the field. BeanMan
I'll put in another plug for the work sharp system. I'm not real good with a stone or even a Lansky but the worksharp gets it done.

Shaun_300
I have a Landsky sharpening system with the coarse, medium, fine and ceramic hones. Has a T shaped vice to put the blade in with 4 different angles. 17, 20, 25 and 30 degrees. I prefer the 25 degree angle, seems to hold an edge the longest. Takes a bit to get used to but once you have the technique you can get one heck of an edge on a knife!
John Andrews
You fellas offer some good suggestions. I have been making custom knives for over 25 years and I use an Edgemaker Pro for a quick field edge. I have passed out the same sharpner to many of my clients. With its bright orange handle, it's also easy to keep track of. No, I do not sell them.
