Guest IADEERDUDE
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... id probably look into an remington 870 or a mossberg 500 for starters both guns are very reliable and easy on the ole checkbook and you can get rifled slug barrels with both models..and the recoil isnt too bad either but you probably want to shot 2 3/4 in slugs cause 3in tend to buck a little bit.. good luck and good huntin
robk
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... i would say if you want a good gun for all around use the bennelli nova is the king in my mind. i just got mine and it is a great gun with lots of good things to talk abooutfromt he barrel end tot he butt fo the stock it has great lines and shoots like a dream and it tight except for the pump area which is a little loose as all of them are and it loads extremely well and when you shoot it you know you have some good down range accuracy rob k
wtnhunt
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... A lot of good shotguns out there. Remington and winchester both have good pump shotguns at reasonable prices, mossberg also makes good shotguns. For recoil, get a limbsaver or pachmayer pad, they help a lot. David_218
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... My choice of slug gun for Deer is the 20 gauge Browning Gold Hunter with 2.5 power scope. A bit on the pricey side but well worth it! There are lots of guys using Remington 870's and 1100 out there also.
JimT
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... Most slug guns kick pretty good. Not real bad, but you will know it. I would probably try to find a gun with a rifled barrel. Maybe even a scope. I know you said you want as pump, but there are also some pretty good bolt action slug guns out there also. The Mossberg 695 comes to mind. While I would go that route, the 870,1300,500 etc. will probably be your cheapest bets as far as pumps go. Guest 2500HD
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... Are you looking for a gun just for deer hunting? If so and you think you need a 12 ga. look at the H&R Ultra Slug gun. The ultimate tack driver for under $200. If you are looking at a pump that you may use for other hunting then teh 870 combo is a great choice.
RangerClay
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... Don't forget to concider a 16 ga. I have used mine for 23 years without a problem. Plenty of pop without all the recoil of a 12 ga. Remington makes an 870 in 16 ga. that was listed as Guns and Ammo magazine gun of the year a couple years ago Ranger

ilhnter
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... I used to shoot a new england single shot 20ga. when i was younger and i killed many deer with it. I know use a mossberg 500. Awesome gun.....you get the slug barrel also and is very accurate. has ported barrel which does reduce recoil. I love that gun and would recomend it. Shaun_300
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... i shoot a Remington 870 Wingmaster. with slugs it sure gives a good wollop, but most of them do. i also have a Remington 1100 20ga, its an AWESOME gun. i deer hunt with a rifle, but i have the 870 for back-up incase the rifle screws up for some reason. AJ
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... I suggest looking at the Remington 870, Winchester 1300, or the Mossberg 500. They can be fit to you and adjusted as you grow. Since you are only 13, your body will change a lot in the next 5 or 6 years. I would get a gun that can be adapted to fit you. All of the above guns can be had with shorter youth stocks. The comb drop can be adjusted with shims. You can't do that with a Nova. As far as growing out of a gun, I still have not grown out of the H&R or New England single shots. To reduce recoil, you have to shoot reduced recoil ammo. The pump will kick slightly less than the single shot you are using because it weighs more. other than increasing the weight of the gun, your options are to have the barrel ported or shoot lighter ammo. The latest recoil pads will help with the perceived recoil.
johnf
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... One more vote for the Benelli Nova. If you look around, you can get one under $300. If your looking for something really cheap, New England makes a "pardner pump" that you can order at Wal-mart for $159. I havn't seen nor shot one, but if they're anything like the NEF singles, it's probibly worth looking at. Any pump 12 ga. slug is going to give your shoulder a pretty good thumping. I would suggest a SVL butt pad. They make a slug feel a little stronger than game loads. Good luck. jf

Tominator
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... Well, depends on your budget. Best pump for the money, the Mossberg 835 and Remington 870 are hard to beat, but they won't help you in the recoil department without some add ons. Best recoil reduction guns would be some type of gas operated semi auto, like the browning gold, or remington 1100, or if your budget allows the Benelli super black eagle (not gas operated, but they have a new recoil reduction gizmo on their new guns this year). You could also port your barrels to act as a muzzle brake which helps in recoil. AJ will be able to answer this best. Sometimes I don't even know why I post information in this room when AJ's here for us.

robk
Re: Looking for a new shotgun.... the bennelli's also have a great recoil system and have add on's as well to reduce the recoil even more. and they have a gun for young people and they can grow up with them. another thing i like is that the shell is limited to just 2 3/4 or you can go to 3 1/2 and most shops will have it the same price as an 870 or other guns in that catagory. i paid 200 for my nova and it is well worth the money paid rob k
