2013 muzzleloader closer

Seems these short afternoon hunts have been some good ones, this afternoon felt like it could be a good one. Was misting light and temp has been dropping. Got home from picking the kids up from school a little late. Had a north wind, not the ideal wind for my back field, but time was short and knew after seeing 4 does back there Tuesday afternoon with no bucks that things had to break open anytime. Took a quick unscented shower and threw on my clothes and took off to the stand. Wind was blowing at my back and blowing to the middle of the field and shifting occasionally, kind of good for me because the edges the deer come out of most often were to my left and to my right, so likely I could see them before they got to the middle of the field and caught my scent. Risky but has paid off before.

About 15 minutes after in the stand had a little ear width 6 come across, he crossed the field and came straight at me directly downwind, offered several shots and never had a clue I was there. About 20-25 minutes later 20 or so minutes before legal shooting light end had a deer pop out about 170 or so yards away, could see antlers with my bare eyes at that distance in the dim light and quickly threw the binos up. I thought at first it was the big 130 class 7 we got pics of back in August. Did not waste any time getting the accura up and getting on him. Found him in the scope and pulled the hammer back and shot. All happened pretty quick and at that distance in dim light did not get as good a look at him as I would have liked. As the smoke cleared I saw a deer run off and was not sure what it was. Dunno if it was a doe or what, but I knew it was not him, I saw white belly and antlers as he tried to get up and fell straight back down. I hit him a little forward and high but he dropped straight down.

Ended up not being the deer I thought he was and had some ground shrinkage. A little disappointed it was not the big 7 but still a pretty decent deer for here. Given what little we have gotten this year in the way of trail cam pics of bucks and how poor decent deer sightings have been, pretty happy to have one on the ground this year.

Here is one of the last pics we got of the deer I was hoping to catch up with this year. Obviously not the deer I shot, but light was fading and it was a good ways off, my split second thinking when I looked through my binos was that it was him. I am still allowed to take 2 more bucks, but hoping the wife or one of the kids gets a crack at something nice.

Had a couple different people I talked with said the buck would be near 130 as a 7, he is missing a brow tine.

We had not gotten any pics of that buck since August though, crops(most likely beans) were harvested late off one field back behind us Wednesday afternoon/night, figure if he was hiding back there it could have pushed him back our way. Pretty sure that is where the buck I shot came from.

Thanks guys. The 2011 season I went without killing a deer, not for not having opportunities, I was holding out for a big 10 point that year. Kinda learned a lesson I guess.

That is a good looking buck, William! Looks like Little Will likes him, too!

Yeah Mike, Will kept making his deer grunt sound. He enjoyed the tractor ride back too. Cannot wait until I can take him with me.

Thanks Al.

Still time left for that other one.

Body shape looked like a good deer and saw those tines at the distance and thought it was the 7, we never got any pics of this deer that I killed. While I have my doubts I am crossing my fingers that 7 is still walking somewhere nearby. Dunno if he is still around or not, sure was hoping someone here would tag him and we could get a better look at him. New neighbor behind us indicated in a conversation with him a couple weeks ago that his father is the only one on his property that shot anything so far, and that was an 8 point that they did not recover.
