Turkeygirl
Looking for some input! Need to get a laptop since I'm going back to school, will be doing probably a lot of research and paper writing. Got a router for Christmas to put on the desktop so I'll be able to get internet through out the house. Leaning away from Dell...had a desktop, only problems and poor CS. So what do you use and recommend and what should I look for in terms of storage/hard drive, etc?
wtnhunt
Dunno Ruth, the asus we got Christina last year seems to be a pretty decent computer. Would get as much ram and the fastest processor you can afford. HD's are not critical to have the biggest as you can always add an external if you need more space. hoytshooter09
I work in electronics and my personal favorite brand Is the Asus and HP anything with 4 g of memory and over 500 HD are decent any of the I series processors are great like the i3 or i5 and a lot of the Asus products have a great warranty too which is one of the reasons I like em. gzilla45
I am a big fan of Acer. My last two laptops have been from them and I have not had any problems. I'd definitely lean towards 4 gig of RAM especially with the new operating systems. If you are mostly going to be using it for research and paper writing you don't need to go crazy on HD space either.
Rhino
All I'll add Ruth is...since you'll be writing a lot of papers...whatever choice you make, a wireless keyboard will sure make it lot easier. My laptop is a MacBook Pro but there's a learning curve when switching to a Mac.
archerjg
I prefer Toshiba, but HP and ASUS are good machines too. Something with at least 4gig of ram and at least 1-500gb hard drive. Something with an Intel Core I7 I5, or AMD quad core if it is in your budget. Since you will be writing papers and doing school projects I'd recommend Office 2010 or newer. ruttinbuc
Go with the most you can afford. There are a lot of good deals out there. Look at what you might need now and what you will probably need later.. This was a good deal but they are gone....for now. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/html/pbPage.PDP/Acer-Aspire-V5-573P-9899-Touchscreen-Laptop-Intel-Core-i7/productID.288024600?siteID=NKa3hZyYoHA-KGxrm1vsLNPktcf1Cb8T1g CNET marketplace has some really good deals on a lot of stuff. ruttinbuc
Going to get out this week to a staples store at least to look at what they have. anyone get their's from a store or did you order online? The best thing to do is see what Staples has to offer in what you are looking for and then research the model number online. You would be surprised at the difference's in prices from different vendors. They all come in a box delivered someplace by a truck. Research your choices. redkneck
I'll take a different position, go to best buy and get the cheapest thing you can find that has at least 4 gigs of ram and a decent sized drive. They're all crap and disposable after a few short years. Skip the add-ons. You'll likely spend as much on software as you will the PC. Just my 2 cents. I can't see spending 500+ on one simply for internet access/office apps.

fly
Ruth, as an educator I would advise you to wait until you know what school you will be attending then get some basic information from the School (not just the university). I have had many students show up with their new Mac's only to find out that the professors at our school only use a PC. Why? Because that is what the University provides and supports. When students experience PC issues I can help them but when they have a MAC I tell them to contact IT which takes a lot longer. In addition most schools will provide you with the computer requirements necessary to be successful in the program.
Turkeygirl
Already know where I'm goin, signd up for classes. Found the college requirements. Anyone know how the AMD processors (i.e. AMD quad core 10) vs Intel I (like i5 or i7) processors compare? Also in regard to internet access the Toshiba say WIFI/Bluetooth, the HPs say WLAN...Whats the difference? I got a router to put on our home PC so I can get wireless internet in the house on the laptop.
fly
Not sure about the chips, but WiFi and WLAN are different ways of saying that the computer can connect to the internet without a wire. Wireless connections are more convenient but can be problematic for online classes. Given 2014 technology I'd think any new computer would be good to go, but historically students have had to connect to the internet with a wire to participate in online classes that require uploading/downloading large files. What program are you in Ruth?

Different terms for wireless networking. Either will work with home network router or where wifi is available. Would strongly suggest checking as many reviews on the brands you are looking at as you possibly can. Would look even closer at reviews on the models.
