Maine Hntr
What's everyone's favorite Turkey gun? What size load do you prefer, 3" or 3 1/2"?
Zizzer59
I just use an old Remington 12 gauge pump with a full choke and 3 1/2 turkey load. I think I will be stepping down to a 3 inch this year, that way if I have to fire off twice in a row my shoulder won't fall off lol. If I get a turkey this year I might upgrade to a new gun, but it will be hard to get rid of that old hand-me-down, also it saves me money for deer season. Ravin R10 man
I use Federal 3.5" # 5 with an Undertaker tube http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/386835000/386835506/pix103690146.jpg
wtnhunt
Use a winchester 1300 buck and tom with the factory choke. Win 3 inch #5 high velocity turkey loads.
PotashRLS
My brother and I both shoot Mossberg Turkey Tactical 3 1/2" with either Federal or Winchester 2 1/4oz. #6s. I have started toying with Hevishot Blend 5,6,7 and boy is that a pattern. Wow.
dbHunterNY
this one below so far.... it's a Benelli Supernova 12ga with comfortech stock. the stock tames the recoil and it's never had a problem cycling a load being it's a pump. right now it's outfitted like the bottom picture. Burris Speed Bead red dot for adjusting POI with different turkey loads and helping not miss those very close shots. the slogan ultraflex sling is guaranteed for life and makes carrying the 12ga while running and gunning much easier. I've used lots of different choke and load combos that work well. still fiddling but... 3.5" hevishot #6, puregold turkey choke 3" federal heavyweight flightcontrol #5, stock mod choke 3" hevishot #5, puregold turkey choke still tinkering with Carlson's ported turkey choke
Maine Hntr
Nice setup db, the reason why I'm asking is because I'm thinking of buying a new toy for myself in the next month or two and have been wanting a Turkey specific gun I guess. I have been looking at a few that have caught my eye, the Remington Versa Max (they have the Versa Max Sportsman out now too for a little bit less $$), a Beretta Outlander or for a bit less money a Mossberg, I like the Remington and Beretta because of the versaport gas systems that regulate the kick vs. being inertia drve.. Also wanted to see how many guys were shooting the 3 1/2" shells vs. 3", Thanks for the feedback.
dbHunterNY
semi-autos are very reliable these days and can cycle anything. I went with a pump because it was cheaper and even more dependable. both auto systems you mentioned are good ones. whether or not to shoot a 3.5" depends on the specific gun. many times 3.5" loads I find get blown out and don't produce any better patterns than 3". however, if you can get a load that doesn't in 3.5" then that's a lot of pellets to work with. Maine Hntr
went to bass pro tonight and held a few different guns, I think the Benelli Super Black Eagle II actually felt the best, man was it lighter by far than any of the others.. pretty pricey but Benelli's one of the best. Anyone have any thoughts on Inertia driven vs. gas? They say Inertia driven will have more kick but it's easier to take apart and clean, gas has less kick and I believe you can shoot more rounds before having to clean because it helps clean itself when cycling? dbHunterNY
another thing you can get the sportsman in a 22" barrel that'd be much better than the 26 or 28" versions. mcnett grip tape with break up that all black if you're worried and still come off with no sticky adhesives. Strut10
Been using a Winchester Super X2 for a lot of years. # 1/2" Winchester HV #6 lead and a XXX-Full Comp-N-Choke tube and it is a monster. Set up a Super X3 last year and all indications are that it will be equally as mean. The SX3 is a whisker lighter than the SX2. Both are gas guns and (if it means anything in the field) are the fastest cycling auto shotguns on the planet, bar NONE. Also................. FWIW............ the SX3 is lighter than the SBE II Benelli and costs about $600 less. That's a LOT of choke tubes, shells or down payment on a turkey hunting trip. Maine Hntr
Been using a Winchester Super X2 for a lot of years. # 1/2" Winchester HV #6 lead and a XXX-Full Comp-N-Choke tube and it is a monster. I actually shoot a Winchester 1300 for my slug gun, I was thinking I would prefer a semi auto for a turkey gun but looking at the Winchester turkey guns they didn't look all that appealing but the SX3 is lighter than the Benelli, i'll check that out too. Which version of the SX3 you shooting?
Strut10
Which version of the SX3 you shooting? My SX3 is actually a 28" barreled Waterfowler in Realtree Max4. It currently has a Kicks GT .665" tube and a Weaver 1x30 red/green dot sight.
colorado bob
Guess, I'm old school. I still use my Remington 870 that I bought back in 1971 from money I earned delivering newspapers after school. It shoot 2 3/4" shells and I use a 30" factory full choke barrel. I used my old Federal 1 1/2 oz "baby Mags" in both #4's & 6's. I've killed gobblers out to 45 yards. My old lead duck loads finally got used up & now I'm using #5's in a Kent shotshell. Maine Hntr
No problem with being old school bob, I view myself that way some times but I just guess I want another toy to add to the collection, congrats on your years of success doing it old school! VermontHunter
My weapon of choice for chasing those turkeys is the Remington M887 Nitro Mag, she's topped off with a Bushnell Trophy Multi-Dot scope, The choke is a Ventalator Extreme super FULL, the round of choice is the Winchester Extreme 3" #5's .... She's definitely a performer ...

Turkeygirl
I shoot a Mossberg 500 20 ga Super Bantam with H.S. Undertaker choke and TruGlo fiber optic sights. Had a Red Dot that lasted one year.
RangerClay
Here an old pic from 2007. I really like my Mossberg 500. I won it in a raffle from DU and it has a few extras installed from them. I've added a red dot scope since this pic and it's a great turkey gun. Zizzer59
535hunter, I'm thinking of buying one of these Mossbergs. What do you think about it?
535hunter
I love it. Its pretty much the same the Mossberg 500 just a 3.5. The only thing I find to be a pain is the accu-choke system. Have only been able to find chokes through Mossberg. I dropped 50 bucks on a xx-full choke for turkey but as far a choke for buck shot and such it comes with the standard chokes full, improved cylinder and modified. Other than that in my opinion its on of the best bangs for the buck. 400 is all I paid at bass pro shops for it. And being very familiar with the m500 model makes break down, cleanings and re-assembly a breeze. Mine has the 28inch barrel standard stock on it with waterfowl camo print on it. The finish is starting to wear on it but I have absolutely nothing to complain about. Oh and it comes with a plug in it so its pretty much ready for anything you can go after. My uncle owns a mossberg maverick and the barrels are interchangeable at least his to mine was. I am pretty sure you could do the same with the 500 if you wanted to for slug barrel or what not. Don't hold me to that. Not 100% on it. Wouldn't get rid of it for anything. Got my first deer and turkey with it.
Zizzer59
I think I'm going to get it then. Wal-Mart has them for $380. I need a new turkey gun. I don't know how much longer my old one will hold up.
535hunter
It should serve you well. I got my first bird with it at about forty five yards. The ease of cleaning and simplicity of it makes it so great and reliable. Another thing is its very long with the barrel on it its close to four feet long. But other than that its great. I hope you enjoy it. What finish or graphics are they offering now?
