brad dryden
Well I am looking to buy a 2000 ford F250 4x4 this is an automatic and it has the 7.3 with 226,024 miles. They are asking $9500. Any ways this is the first time im considering a Diesel just concerned about repair cost and what to look for. I heard stay away from the 6.0 and the 7.3 is the best way to go unless you buy a new model. This truck will be a daily driver and used for some light to moderate pulling just a handful of times for farming.
Shaun_300
I know the 7.3 is a much better engine than the 6.0! The 6.0 engines were notorious for head gasket, EGR cooler, oil cooler problems. Big bucks to fix.
inhuntr
Power Stroke 7.3 Yep ...7.3 is a good engine!
brad dryden
I did alot of looking into the 6.0 they were saying you had to take the motor out to work on the most of the time. But you can fix this issues by upgrading the head bolts and upgrading the system for about $2000 thats just parts though
Trevor
I had a 2003 e350 with the 7.3 power stroke for a work truck. When it finally quite it had 975000 Kms on it. To work on a 6.0 truck you have to take the cab off the frame. And that's not a fun job.
JKAPP01
I would check the maintenance records for sure. Maybe have a mechanic look at it. It's a used vehicle with some miles on it so eventually you'll have to put some money into it. Check out the videos on youtube from "PowerstrokeHelp" he has some GOOD stuff. I'd get a late model 6.0 IF it was bulletproofed already. I have a buddy who bought an 05 6 liter with like 115k for around $19,000. He's already had to do turbo, shocks, a tune, and he just blew something in the motor that cost over $3,000 to fix. He hasn't even had it a year and has already dumped over $5,000 into it. Couple that with a payment and you can see the disaster. I've been debating the same thing of getting a diesel and am tormented by the idea of buying one 15 years old or spending WAY MORE on the newer, emissions controlled new ones. If I do decide to get one, I'll probably have a 1/2 ton f150 as a back up :-) Let us know what you decided to do!
Jeramie
There are TONS of 7.3 motors around Okieland.... Here that is a bit high on price unless youre getting a Crew Cab, 4x4. Regardless, they are really, really good diesel engines. My dad has a mid 90's F350 that has almost 600,000 miles on the truck and he is on his second (used engine). He got right at 450,000 on the first engine and it started having trouble. Instead of working on everything he just ran to a salvage and bought another 7.3 with just under 200k and swapped the motors and kept trucking. If they have a low gear they are a powerhouse.. Im going to upgrade to a 250 or 350 next year and will look for a 2003 or older with this engine. The 6.0 is nothing but trouble. They almost give them away down here because noone wants them.
