AJ
Ok, lets get some opinions out there. When are premium bullets needed? I don't care if you would not use that chambering for that scenario. What bullet style would you recommend for the following scenarios: 1. Eastern state chasing whitetail deer. The shots could be as far as 100 yards but for the most part are under 75 yards. The cover ranges from open hardwoods to mountain laurel thickets. The hunter is carrying a 30-06. 2. Canadian province after whitetail deer. The shots are similar to the above scenario. The hunter is carrying a 7mm Rem Mag. 3. Western state chasing pronghorn antelope. Shots can be anywhere out to 500 yards. The hunter is carrying a 25 WSSM. 4. Western state varmint hunting. We have a heavily populated prarie dog town and shots can be out to 1000 yards. The shooter is using a 22-250 Rem. 5. Western state looking for elk. Shots can be anywhere out to 400 yards. The hunter is carrying a .338 Win Mag. 6. Eastern Canada bear hunt. Shots will be relatively close range typically under 75 yards. Bears will be up to 500 pounds. The hunter has a 300 WSM. Ok, list what type of bullets you would use in the above situations.

Guest Colorado Bob
Re: Which bullet?? #1-----I would use 180 or 220 grain Round-Nose---Core-lokts or Power Points. #2------160 grain Core-lokts or Power Points. #3-----LOL---what is a 25 WSSM----some new fangled cartridge??? I know it's a 25 caliber ---so my choice would be 117 grain SP. Antelope are not that hard to kill. #4---Hope you are shooting handloads------You can run thru a ton of ammo at a dog town. If your rifle likes a 55 grain BTHP or BTSP #5 225 grain in Barnes, TBBC or Partition. 400 yards???? Bullet will drop over 20". Stick to 300 yards. Better yet---get a 30/06 & use 180 grain bullets like I do every elk season!! #6----180 grain Round Nose Core-lokts or Power Points. Can I use my 444 Big-Bore instead ??? Guest bronco_mudder
Re: Which bullet?? 1. Good quality bullet that will hold together such as a Sierra or Hornady soft point. 2. Same as number one, no need for a premium bullet, but something of good quality, I'm a Hornady fan. 3. A premium bullet would be nice in this situation, a Nosler Balistic Tip should open nicely at those longer ranges. 4. Well because I like Hornady, I'd have to say the V-Max would be my choice. 5. Again something in the premium line would work well. My choices would be Nosler Partition, Barnes X boat tail, Speer Grand Slam, or the Swift A Frame, something that would give deep penetration, and not break up. 6. I'd have to go with just something in a good quality soft point bullet. Like I mentioned above, the Hornady, or Sierra lines should work fine. I think in most hunting situations a quality bullet that holds together, not a premium rapid expansion, or deep penetrating, just a jacketed soft point will do the trick, providing you are using an appropriate caliber firearm. Although when handloading it is always nice to have something different to play with. Great question AJ
AJ
Re: Which bullet?? Interesting results. While no answer is wrong here, it does show some favorites are. My answers to these are: 1. What ever soft point ammo is on hand. 2. Same as #1. 3. Which ever poly tip bullet shot best. 4. Any 50 to 55 grain varmint bullet that shoots good enough. 5. Since I used out to 400 yards, I would lean towards the Accubond or Scirocco. 6. Same as #1.
