Leg Numbing Longbeard

WHISKEYSWAMP

I had one of my best turkey hunts on Saturday with my 12 year old stepdaughter Samara. After sitting in our blind for an hour or so without any action, we decided to go after them. I had an idea where they were based on early gobbles off the roost. As soon as we got to the old overgrown cow pasture I let out a few calls… instant gobbles, at least 3 birds, 2 were close. We set up in an over grown fence row, burying ourselves in the tall grass and briars. These birds sounded hot, so I expected them to come in pretty quick. I guess they had other plans because for the next hour and a half they stayed out of sight down in small valley that runs through the pasture. They easily gobbled over 100 times at any sound… my calls, crows, geese.

Finally, after a few soft purrs and clucks, one showed himself. He walked up the edge where the pasture meets the corn field and stopped at 40 yards, just short of my shooting hole. I guess he wasn’t done gobbling, as he stood behind the brush for another 20 minutes gobbling. As he was walking away, he stepped in my lane and I let him have it. As I do with every bird I sprung to my feet to run over to him, only my legs were not there, completely numb from the long sit. I tumbled off to my left and hit the ground. After getting the feeling back we made it over to our first bird together… 2 year old, 9” beard, ¾” spurs. It was easily the longest I’ve ever had to work a bird. Samara was a trooper getting up several mornings at 5am. I passed on a couple easy birds the weekend prior just because she couldn’t make it out those days. I hope she’ll be the shooter someday, but she hasn’t shown interest in shooting guns. It’s always fun to have her along none the less.
