Maine Hntr
Well, this being my third year in the woods hunting turkey I finally put one down! I'll admit I don't spend nearly as much time as deer season in the woods but it sure was fun and I enjoyed every minute of it. I took Friday off to travel to Maine for a 3 day weekend with my family and some turkey hunting and let's just say it wasn't looking good, birds didn't do much yesterday and today started off with pretty heavy rains for most of the morning although I could hear a bird way off in the distance during some morning drizzle. Thankfully Maine laws changed this year so you can hunt afternoons too and I knew with sun and clearing in the forecast it would most likely have the birds moving this afternoon. Back to my blind around 2 and I see 2 birds off in the distance working the field, maybe just over 100 yards, I could see beards on both but couldn't decipher jake or Tom, as they got closer they both looked to have 6"+ beards and we're gobbling pretty good, I listened and watched for about an hour every once in a while throwing out a little cluck or purr to let them know I was there, finally they started working towards the opposite end of the field so I let out a couple really soft purrs and they decided to redirect and come my way, crossed a little wood strip and offered me about a 25 yard shot with the new Benelli super black eagle, the rest was history as they say! I'll post pics in the contest room probably tomorrow once I get the form filled out but here's some pics for now... 9" beard, 7/8" spurs, 15lbs 6oz., I'll take it! VermontHunter
Excellent !! What a great bird, Im glad to see everything came together for you, yep the rains here in the North East have been something to factor into the Turkey hunting this year and required some persistence. Vermont has yet to let us hunt past NOON for these feathery critters. Love the pic ... Edited May 11, 2014 by VermontHunter
Maine Hntr
Thanks, yeah being able to hunt past noon is a huge plus in my opinion, it gives you more options obviously. Funny thing is I had 3 gobblers out first thing this AM and one looked like a boss tom, but of course Sunday blue laws kept me from going out today. Beautiful blue bird day though. VermontHunter
That's another law I never understood ,,, NO hunting on Sunday, glad we don't have that one here in Vermont, because most of my hunting is done on that day since I work 6 days a week.
