What do I need to start hunting deer?

A buddy and I have been shooting rifles for years but have never really gone hunting. We both have well-maintained 30-06's but don't have much else for equipment. What equipment do you recommend to get started hunting deer? (We live in East TX btw).

Welcome to the forums.

Don't know about too much about Texas seasons, but guessing for the rifle seasons you will probably need a few layers of clothes for different weather conditions. Good boots, possibly snake boots. A good breathable weather proof outer layer with thinsulate is usually a good investment.

Would pick up a grunt call.

Get a good pair of Binos,, perhaps a set of shooting sticks, maybe a pop up blind, although you can always build a brush blind. East Texas has timber, so maybe a hang on treestand, or a climber.

Camo can play a huge part depending on method of hunting, although hunter orange is a requirement in most states when rifle hunting.

anything in Real Tree and your stylin!

The most important thing is to secure land to hunt, unless you have relatives or a buddy that does. State or Federal land is usually open for hunting too.

set of antlers, or device to rattle

as far as boots and clothes, you know better than I, if you spend time outdoors

A high rack, spotlight and silencer :).......

J/K, it doesn't take much to get started. When hunting with rifles it's more about knowing your gun than even having camo. Spotting scope and binos would help to judge deer, but if your just starting it's more about getting your feet wet than looking for big deer.

First of all, you will need to check the Texas regs for seasons, bag limits, license, deer hunting regulations, and I'm sure they will require hunter orange during gun seasons. Go here for that. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/

Since you're mainly gun hunting in east Texas and probably in a timbered area and fields you can either hunt off the ground or in a treestand. Since you're just starting out I'd recommend starting with ladder stands for treestands. If you're hunting off the ground you a fold out camo chair (for level ground) or a tree seat (seat that attaches to a tree), will sure make you sit a lot more comfortable. You can get a ground blind but I don't think it's absolutely necessary for gun hunting unless your on a field. They make camo material pole type blinds that are a lot easier to deal with & haul around than a pop up blind. Other than that, camo clothing to help you blend in. You'll need warm clothing on colder days and need to consider you'll be sitting still, requiring the need for warmer cloths than you're used to when moving around. Boots, hat, & gloves too. If your head and/or feet get cold you won't last long in the elements.

The first and most important thing you need when starting out hunting is PATIENCE, without this important element, you may become discouraged quickly. Don't set the bar too high and just enjoy the time in the woods. I've been hunting for 25 years now and have yet to kill a buck that would make it in the B&C books.

Good comfortable quiet clothing for the elements in say Realtree camo, binos, and rifle is all. A good mentor that's a deer hunter that kills deer would help. "Strategies for whitetails" is still a great book to read if you're just starting out or even down the road to help with the knowledge side f things. You then just have to get out and get experience.

Required:

1. Knowledge of the states deer hunting laws

2 Paperwork the state requires to be legal (license, permit)

3. Weapon/ammo that is legal.

4. A place to hunt

5. Clothing (colors) as required by law.

Highly Recommended:

1. Knowledge concerning field dressing (not required as you could get someone to do it for you or get the animal to a butcher within an hour or two.

2. Knife (sharp)

3. Small saw to cut limbs / make a ground blind

4. Clothing and boots that will make you comfortable in the conditions you hunt.

5. Rope/cart/sled or something to get the deer to your vehicle.

6. A plan for what to do with the deer (process / give it away, whatever)

Recommend:

1. Tree stand(s) and safety equipment

2. Trail camera(s)

3. Binoculars

4. Ground blind

5. Grunt call

6. Thermacel (if bugs are an issue where you hunt)

7. Something to check wind direction (wether forecast, white powder bottle)

8. Camera with a timer and a small adjustable tripod that fits around small tree branches.

9. Doe estrus scent (Tinks) for the rut.

10. 400.00 to mount your first monster buck!

Happy hunting
