Looks like heavy mast crops

Whether there is any legitimacy to the states claims that heavy mast crops equates to lower harvest numbers or not, I don't know for certain. I do know however that this year looks to be a very heavy year around here. Hardwoods here are loaded with nuts.

Numbers were down last year again, mast crops were average.

With all the rainfall we have had. I've noticed all the nut trees are full. The hickory, black walnuts, and oaks are all full. Even the seed pods on the black locust trees are full. Going to be hard hunting with corn this year. Three years ago corn rotted on the ground when we had a large acorn crop.

With all the rain we're had in MO this year compared to the last 2 years, I'm not surprised the mast crop looks good. JMO but I believe the lower harvest numbers on good mast crop years equates on the fact that many hunters rely on deer entering food plots and agricultural fields. If there is mast in abundance for deer, they are more apt to arrive later at those open food source areas than during years when the mast crop is poor. Also, during good mast crop years that food source is generally close to where they are bedded causing them to browse around there before moving on to other food sources.

Baiting is not legal here during seasons, so don't have the corn issues/concerns.

Sure food plot activity will not be as heavy during the normal. Our property is loaded with oaks, have noticed deer seem to wander aimlessly when there is an over abundance of acorns dropping.

We can bait here in Louisiana. I don't hunt over bait when I'm bow hunting. Rifle season I hunt the feeders and food plots. We bait to keep the does close. Hoping to catch a buck passing through looking for that hot babe. Also I have my nieces and nephews with me most of the time. They are from 5 to 12 years old. They are my hunting buddies. So I keep the feed on the ground so they can have something to look at. You have to keep them interested.

Always look forward to the youth season here. Food plots usually payoff for at least one of our kids during our youth hunt each year, plan on getting my 12 and 8 year old daughters out this fall.

Looking like I need to focus on a morning two person setup in the woods for this fall, old stand I have needs some work.
