wtnhunt
My home brew cams i guess have me a bit spoiled with picture quality and silent operation even though they use flash. The debate on white flash scaring deer has been interesting. Have watched a number of deer that are oblivious to the flash and seem to care less and then watched some that knew exactly where the cams were and avoided them like the plague. I have noticed both moultrie cams, a d55irxt and an m880 (mid price range cams), both ir models, make a very faint click sound when taking pics with the ir leds. The deer must be hearing them because they are looking directly at the cams. They are not supposed to see the ir. It seems that some deer may be avoiding the ir cam on my mineral site. So what is worse a faint click or a flash? Miss having that better picture quality even though the mp count on the m880 is supposedly double that of my little homemade cams. Not overly impressed with the ir night pics with the moultrie cams either.
Rhino
So what is worse a faint click or a flash? IMHO...a flash. Like you said some deer seem oblivious to a flash but from my experience the vast majority are spooked by them...some to the point of avoiding the camera thereafter like the plague. My Reconyx IR cams don't make a noise when they go off but I believe they can see the faint IR flash. It doesn't seem to bother them at all. It does cause them to move their head around which gives me a better look at them from different angles. At times they even move in for a closer look. Every cameras IR flash is different so some are obviously much better than others. Some web sites, like trailcampro provide sample IR pics at multiple distances that give you the option to choose what you prefer based on price range. That and the ultra fast speed of of the cam to take pics after being tripped is 2 of the main reasons I like Reconyx over all other cams. They are on the high end of the price range though. hoosierhunter
Is second the flash as being worse for spooking deer.
Ravin R10 man
I have gone strictly no flash, and IR...not seen any spooked deer
redkneck
I've noticed deer looking at ir flash like Al said but never seen one spook. I'm speaking strictly on the newer ir models with the blackout filters, not the older ones like my old Leaf River that you could have read a newspaper in front of when it went off. Never heard one click though.
wtnhunt
These are both "low glow" ir models. You can see the red glow, wondered how well the deer see it. Definitely does not seem like it should be as "spooky" to the deer, but it does seem like some are avoiding the mineral site and have gotten a few series of pics where deer were high tailing it. Not sure why else they would be taking off if not for that camera. Price I am paying with pic quality makes me consider going back to my flash homebrew at the mineral site. Turkeygirl
I've noticed more deer look at the IR than they do at my homebrew whiteflash....
wtnhunt
Got a decent buck(past his ears and should be at last an 8) in a bachelor group of 4 coming around the minerals that is tough to tell with the 880 how decent he is. Probably gonna swap back to my old home brew at the mineral site at least maybe long enough to get some better quality pics and move this moultrie to another spot probably a trail or edge of a food plot. Will see of i can come up with a series of pics to compare.

Tominator
I seriously doubt if a deer has the mental capacity to make sense of a slight click. Yes they hear it, but do they associate it with danger? In my opinion, no.
