Bow Speed Question.....

Well, I haven't had a chance to make it to my local shop yet to hit the chronograph, but I am itching to see what I am shooting with the new Mathews.

I am shooting a Mathews SQ 2, set @ 70 lb. with a 30" draw length. My arrows are Beman ICS Trebark 340's cut to 30 1/4" length, and this is topped off with 125 grain heads.

I was shooting 280 fps with my High Country and all the same specs except I was shooting 100 grain heads. To me, it seems like the Mathews is just as fast as the High Country, even shooting the heavier head.

I was just wondering if anyone on here shoots a similar set up and I was wondering what sort of speed they were getting. Sorry for the long posts, but I had to explain everything lol

Re: Bow Speed Question.....

I copied this from the Mathews Forums...

IBO Specs - 30" draw/70lb draw weight and a 350gr arrow.

For every inch of draw length you go down you will lose 10 FPS

For every 5# draw weight you go down you will lose 10 FPS

For every 3 grains of weight your arrow is over IBO ( 5 grains per pound) you will lose 1 FPS

For every 3 grains of weight you add to your string you will lose 1 FPS.

Re: Bow Speed Question.....

PA-

I too have a SQ2, mine is set to 70 lbs draw weight but at only a 27.5" draw length so I get much less speed then yours will.

I shoot a 26.5" GoldTip XT5575 with a 125g tip, 7" wrap and 5.5" vanes so its a heavy 445 grains.

I am getting 255 fps with mine...

With no wrap, 4" vanes, and a 100g tip on the same arrow I was getting 262 fps.

I am sure your getting in the 280's with your bow.

Things you can do to speed up your bow is limit string accessaries. Use only 1 brass nock point if you have 2 currently, remove the brass nock under the strink tubing near the cam end of the string, use a peep that does not have rubber tubing. That one alone can grab you 7 to 10 fps gain.

I hope this helps you out.

Good Luck.

Re: Bow Speed Question.....

ok heres some specs you might need.. your arrows are 10.0 gr per inch . so if you have a 30 1/4 inch arrows its 302.5 grains for the raw shaft..

Beeman ICS treebark arrows raw shaft 302.5..grs

Nocks for 1..........................................13.0 grs

inserts for 1.........................................23.0 grs

fletching 4 inch vanes....9 grs each.........27.0 grs

field points...........................................125 grs

total arrow weight will be around 490.5 grs..

all these figures came right out of the Lancaster catalog under the Beeman area with there quoted specs on there nocks and insert weight....

thats a pretty heavy arrow to be shooting anywhere near 280 fps.. my guess is you are probably shooting near 250 fps or less... just dont let the chronograph let you down , if your arrows do weigh that much and they fly great then dont worry about it....

Re: Bow Speed Question.....

It can do so but only by 1 to 1.5 fps. Its more for vibration dampening.

Kinda like those TRU speed balls.

By adding weight at a very specific place on your string, which is a pain to tune, very near to your cam, will increase your speed. But like I said, by a very small amount. 2 cam bows twice as much can be added according to TRU Balls.

The thing about the brass nock Mathews put on there, its to far away from the cam to add speed so therefore its subtracting it but does help with vibration.

I gained almost 2 fps when I took mine off, and once I put new string and cables on I never added another one.

Re: Bow Speed Question.....

Yeah, I'm not too worried about actual speed, I was just curious to see until I got a chance to hit the chronie. It's deadly accurate and that's all that matters. However, as said before, I was shooting 280 fps on the nose with my High Country and that was with 100 grain heads, arrow and everything else was the same, just the bow has changed.

For the record, I have a string loop, a small peep sight without the surgical tubing, and (2) String Leeches on my string, that's it. No brass nocks, eliminator buttons or anything of that nature.

We shall see.

Re: Bow Speed Question.....

DO NOT REMOVE THE NOCK UNDER THE RUBBER BY THE CAM!!!!!!!

This is the speed nock and is placed there by the manufacturer to get the best performance out of your bow. If you were to move that nock up or down even just a bit you would see your speed go down a lot, that's why it's called a "Speed Nock".
