Who all is ready for deer season??

Recommended Posts

No trips, just more of the same, hunting in the backyard for these dinky TN deer.

Geared towards getting the kids out this fall, will be taking our 8 and 13 year old daughters. Have not even shot my bow one time this year and season opens in a little over a month. Probably going to pull the hangon and climbers out of the garage this weekend to let them air out and maybe hang them next weekend when the heat index is not so high, supposed to be up around 110 today, already over 80 actual temp this morning, just too warm.

Nothing yet in the way of tc pics to make me go whoa(wondering where all the old deer this state says are here are at, got plenty of 2.5 and younger bucks around), honestly looking like the makings for a pretty dismal season for me. Had hopes the wide 3.5 year old 8 I passed last year might make his way around, but not seen any sign of him since late January tc pics.

Hope to maybe get a few hunts in with Christina, our oldest, when she is home from college for her Christmas break. She will miss the best hunting, but still hope to get some tree time in, sure she will be ready for it.

Ready? Well mentally as always when it gets this close. Almost ready with preseason chores. Spent last week in Missouri taking care of chores. On & off rain kept us from planting the few food plots we'd planned on planting in buck forage oats & turnips. Have ~38 ac. in clover plots looking great though, not to mention the soybeans & corn as options too. Wet, muddy conditions also kept us from setting our 3 6'x6' elevated bowhunting blinds. Little bummed about that since I wanted the deer to have time to get used to them before the season opened. We did manage to get the vast majority of our treestands and a couple of ground blinds set & ready to hunt...all total 36 of them. Ran the trail cams for the 1st time last week too. Very impressive run on the cams even though we only had 8 of our 10 cams out running for the 1st run. Got all 10 of them out now in new spots to try to get a better feel for the mature buck inventory around the property for this year. When I get caught up on my home "to do" list, I'll post some buck picks in the photo forum.

shot with the kids this w.e....man, this rotor cuff is giving me grief..not going to practice much with it...I'll be good for one shot, as long as it's somewhat out in front, far left side is prob. not going to happen, unless I stand to get squared off some..Looks like I better start looking at crossbows for next year. Some parts are wearing out..lol

Was going to go bow hunt ohio last week of October but had stuff come up. One was I've had issues with shoulder the last month. Head of pack for an outdoor bow league but had to stop so it can get better before bow season. Have gone to physical therapy and doing exercises every night. Not sure I'll get to hunt much anyway as we've started a QDM co-op in my area that's now up to 11,000+ acres worth of private land owners. I'm one of the ones that's a director steering the ship so to speak. hoping to make the hunting better for all and make more responsible and educated hunters within the community. A lot to happen from here on out.

Since I'm moving from CA to TX later this week I hadn't really thought about hunting this year. Living here in CA the opportunities are not what they used to be, at least not for me. I have to say though, the area in West Texas I'm moving to has white tail AND mule deer not too far away. So I have to say that for the first time in several years there actually is a very good chance I'll have some opportunities before the end of the season to get out there. If not, there's always them damn hogs...

Going up the mtn & hunt wapiti. I've got a 1st season either sex tag, starts 10/12---5 day season. I've got a 3rd season doe tag for my buddy's place. That will be more of a shoot than a hunt. I've got a cow elk tag for my buddy's place---that's good to 1/15/15.

I've got a whitetail hunt with my brother for Ohio's gun season. That's the week after Thanksgiving. He shot my 870 this weekend. It's a couple inches @ 50 yards. Not bad for a smooth bore using Winchester foster slugs.

But my big trip is back to Kansas for long beards next April. :)

  • 1 month later...

Oh ya, just got my new rifle to quit copper stripping at the muzzle, sighted in for 100yds and zeroed the turrets on my Vortex. Can't wait to perforate some Whitetails to warm up for my antlered moose draw. Run into a school mate I haven't seen in 14 yrs, he's a Guide now, his specialty is guiding Cougar hunts, his success rate is over 80%.
